# ***Pavement Biography***
***Pavement*** is an American indie rock band that formed in *[Stockton, California](https://cutt.ly/kAcQ2T5)*, in 1989. For most of their career, the group consisted of ***[Stephen Malkmus](https://cutt.ly/wAcWVDV)*** (vocals and guitar), ***[Scott Kannberg](https://cutt.ly/NAcW1zU)*** (guitar and vocals), ***[Mark Ibold](https://cutt.ly/RAcW0al)*** (bass), ***[Steve West](https://cutt.ly/rAcW2Jk)*** (drums), and ***[Bob Nastanovich](https://cutt.ly/bAcW3NZ)*** (percussion and vocals).
With their fractured songs, unexpected blasts of feedback, laconic vocals, cryptic literate lyrics, and defiant low-fidelity, ***Pavement***, along with ***[Sebadoh](https://cutt.ly/bAcW7TL)***, were the leaders of the *lo-fi* movement that dominated the U.S. *indie rock* in the early '90s.
> The collection of all of ***Pavement's*** low-fidelity early singles and EPs, ***“Westing (By Musket and Sextant)”*** features considerably less melody than ***[“Slanted and Enchanted”](https://cutt.ly/LATP5yG)***.
# ***The Song Info***

**"Vivian Girls"*** are an American band from Brooklyn, New York. started in March 2007 as the trio of ***[Cassie Ramone (Grzymkowski)](https://cutt.ly/vnzc08H)*** (guitar/vocals), ***[Katy "Kickball Katy" Goodman](https://cutt.ly/Mnzc8zT)*** (bass/drums/vocals), and ***[Frankie Rose](https://cutt.ly/ynzve2r)*** (drums/bass/vocals).
Band named after the magnum opus of outsider author artist ***[Henry Darger](https://cutt.ly/bnzvoan)*** (titled *"The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion"*).
The band paired girl group melancholy with punk nihilism in reverb-heavy songs that recalled the raw, grainy beauty of lesser-known '90s independents like ***”[Black Tambourine](https://cutt.ly/pnzvsLY)”***, ***”[Talulah Gosh](https://cutt.ly/AnzvhqF)”***, and ***”[Tiger Trap](https://cutt.ly/qnzvzkr)”***.
In their initial seven-year run, the band toured the world and released new music constantly, the economic hooks and fuzzy urgency of their 2008 self-titled debut album becoming influential in their own right.
While only a band for a short while, they recorded a demo which included five original songs and a ***”Wipers”*** cover, and began to play locally in Brooklyn and Katy and Cassie's home state of New Jersey.
Within the first couple of months they had already developed a strong local following, supporting acts like ***”Jay Reatard”***, ***”[Sonic Youth](https://cutt.ly/xnzm13C)”*** and the ***”King Khan & BBQ Show”*** as well as finding kindred spirits in other locals like ***”Cause Co-Motion!”***, ***”Crystal Stilts”***, and ***”[Woods](https://cutt.ly/Lnzm3Yj)”***, with whom they’ve shared many bills and helped develop a local scene.
On the second album, ***"Everything Goes Wrong"***, the ***"Girls"*** didn't move the sound of debut release, filled with short, sharp, and punky songs influenced by C-86, shoegaze, girl groups, and classic punk rock played with a ramshackle abandon.
They bash through a collection of noisy songs that are a little punker and rawer than those on their previous album. Easystandable combination of window-rattling punk and more restrained indie pop makes for a nice balance and shows the band growing just the right amount.
***When I'm Gone”*** is the eighth song on band’s second studio album ***"[Everything Goes Wrong](https://cutt.ly/wnxoj3U)"***,, released on September 8, 2009 by ***"[In the Red Records](https://cutt.ly/hnzKC2e)"***.

# ***Sonic Youth Biography***
***Sonic Youth*** was an American rock band based in *New York City*, formed in 1981.
Founding members ***[Thurston Moore](https://cutt.ly/AOmudDl)*** (guitar, vocals), ***[Kim Gordon](https://cutt.ly/LOmujx4)*** (bass, vocals, guitar) and ***[Lee Ranaldo](https://cutt.ly/GOmuz5Y)*** (guitar, vocals) remained together for the entire history of the band, while ***[Steve Shelley](https://cutt.ly/OOmubhc)*** (drums) followed a series of short-term drummers in 1985, rounding out the core line-up.
***[Jim O'Rourke](https://cutt.ly/eOmuRjF)*** (bass, keyboards, guitar) was also a member of the band from 1999 to 2005, and ***[Mark Ibold](https://cutt.ly/bOmuPsq)*** (guitar, bass) was a member from 2006 to 2011.
***Sonic Youth*** emerged from the experimental *no wave* art and music scene in New York before evolving into a more conventional rock band. Their inventive use of alternate tunings, dissonance, and feedback, which they combined with the intensity of *hardcore punk* and the performance art aesthetic of New York's *avant-garde*, created a new sonic landscape with an impact that lasted for decades.
> The Sonic Youth fourth studio album, ***“Sister”*** furthered the band's move away from the no wave genre towards more traditional song structures, while maintaining an aggressively experimental approach.
>
> With ***"Sister"***, ***SY*** revealed that they were a great rock band as well as a great art band.
> The sheets of sound that issued from ***Thurston Moore*** and ***Lee Renaldo's*** re-tuned and modified guitars were still the core of their sound, but ***Sonic Youth's*** songcraft was steadily improving as they made better and more effective use of their aural palette and created a melodic context that helped their noisy report make greater dramatic sense.
>
> After going through a handful of drummers, ***Steve Shelley*** finally gave abnd the combination of chops, imagination, and force that they needed behind the kit, helped firm up the tunes and added some discipline to ***Moore*** and ***Renaldo's*** exploratory guitar work that, remarkably, made their twisted instrumental figures more impressive and no less distinctive.
