What is the Organisation of Oil Producing Countries (OPEC)??️
?Who are its members? ?What does it do?
The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries is a group of thirteen countries that collectively produce around one-third of the world’s crude oil. ‘OPEC plus’, including aligned countries such as Russia, produces around 40%.
To some, this may look like the basis of an economic cartel, and OPEC is sometimes used as a textbook example of one: where suppliers of a good get together to maximise and divide up profits among themselves while fending off potential competitors. But there’s reason for doubt: and one recent study has argued that OPEC members regularly cheat on their commitments. As long as the world continues to consume significant quantities of crude oil, OPEC looks set to continue as a major force in global geopolitics. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG6kcg4qPcw
Today we visit a forgotten empire that triggered WW1: the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Assembled in 1867, this diverse empire was a European powerhouse, though rife with internal conflict.
In the early 20th century, a fuse was lit in the Balkans. This region, a hotbed of ethnic tensions, saw a surge in nationalist movements that would prove pivotal in igniting the Great War.
In 1914, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, was assassinated in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian nationalist. This was the spark that set the powder keg ablaze. Although other factors laid the groundwork--the empire's response, and the alliances it triggered, led to the outbreak of WW1.
Struggling with internal unrest, a weak military, and a convoluted alliance with Germany, the Austro-Hungarian Empire crumbled swiftly, eventually dissolving in 1919. Its collapse fostered political instability, sowing seeds for future conflicts, particularly WW2.
The Balkan nationalist movements and the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire serve as crucial milestones in understanding the geopolitical shifts of the 20th century.

In 2019, the world was shocked by the tragic case of Harry Dunn, a British teenager killed in a road accident. The suspect? Anne Sacoolas, wife of a U.S. diplomat, who fled to America claiming diplomatic immunity. But what is diplomatic immunity?
Diplomatic immunity, a cornerstone of international relations, protects diplomats from prosecution under host country laws. It ensures diplomats can carry out their duties without fear of legal harassment or political retribution. It's a foundational concept in international relations, born from the idea that diplomats need to operate without the fear of prosecution, even when they're in violation of the host country's laws. But when immunity shields those involved in serious crimes, it raises questions about justice and accountability.
However, imagine a world without diplomatic immunity. Would diplomacy be hindered by constant legal threats? Or would it ensure justice for victims like Harry Dunn?

1. Russia Pulls Back Troops from Ukrainian Border
Russia’s defence ministry has said that it will begin withdrawing troops from the Crimean Peninsula to their permanent bases this week, easing fears of hostilities between Russia and Ukraine.
2. Baltics Expel Russian Diplomats
The Baltic States of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia have expelled 4 Russian diplomats in solidarity with Czechia this week, following accusations made by Prague that Russia was involved in a fatal explosion at an arms depot in eastern Czechia in 2014.
3. Biden Recognises Armenian Genocide
Joe Biden has become the first US president to issue a statement formally describing the 1915 massacre of Armenians as a genocide this week, in a move likely to stoke tensions with NATO ally Turkey.
4. New Zealand 5 Eyes

The United Arab Emirates is on the move. This small yet dynamic Gulf state, fuelled by its financial success of the past 20 years stemming oil drilling and exports, is looking to establish itself in the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa for geostrategic purposes. In a move symbolic of the post-cold war world order, the UAE has begun a programme of a military installation and commercial port building across the region, in an attempt to expand its influence.
The Red Sea and Horn of Africa is increasingly playing host to state which wishes to generate commercial and military leverage in pursuit of the own geostrategic goals. Among these states are Russia, the UK, the US, China, Japan, France, Italy and Turkey.
What will the result of this scramble for East Africa be? Currently, that is anyones guess.

The Pentagon has said China is expanding its nuclear force, has doubled its nuclear warhead stockpile since 2020, and is on course to quadruple its total number of warheads according to a report on military and security developments concerning China.
Currently, China has around 400 warheads, but experts are predicting this could rise to 1,500 by 2035, with no stated plans for its increased stockpile. However, Xi called for building a strong strategic deterrence during October’s party conference.
By comparison, the US has 3750 active nuclear warheads, and a rise in Chinese stockpiles is causing uncertainty for US defense officials as they figure out how to deal with two nuclear powers in Russia and China.
China responded to the US report, reiterating its no first use of nuclear weapons stance and calling the US the “biggest troublemaker and destroyer of world peace and stability.”
