Nature Reserve - The mute swan is a very large white waterbird. It has a long S-shaped neck and an orange bill with black at the base of it. Flies with its neck extended and regular slow wingbeats. The population in the UK has increased recently, perhaps due to better protection of this species. The problem of lead poisoning on lowland rivers has also largely been solved by a ban on the sale of lead fishing weights. Some birds stay in their territories all year, while others move short distances and form winter flocks. In cold weather, some birds arrive from Europe in eastern England.

The Armed Forces Day is to took place on Saturday June 2015 from 12 noon on the Common Triangle outside the Public Halls, Southdown Road. Attractions include Veterans Parade, Cadet competitions and display, Drill display, Climbing Wall and Bouncy Obstacle Course, plus much more.
Cadets competed in a series of team activities to determine who can take home the desired Best Harpenden Cadet Group trophy.
The aim of the day is to increase public awareness of the armed forces and the contributions they make for our country. Local and national celebrations will be taking place across the land to celebrate the men and women who serve and have served in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. It is also an opportunity for members of the public to show their support for the armed forces community.

Three men were rushed to hospital after an incident at High Elms Manor, where a LinkUPTV music video was being filmed on Sunday night.
"At exactly 8.57pm to 9pm, there was a commotion between two groups of people.
"Then between those times above two gun shots rang out, as people screamed and ran to their cars.
Police arrested 8 men and have charged two following an incident in High Elms Lane, Abbots Langley, last week.
Sharriff Dacres, 21, of Cotterells, Hemel Hempstead, has been charged with attempted murder.
Alexander Dacres, 26, of Tudor Avenue, Watford, has been charged with possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, two charges of possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply and possession of Class B drugs.
The incident took place on Sunday, June 12.
Both men have been remanded in custody and are due to appear at St Albans Crown Court on Friday, July 15.
