Ham Radio | Yaesu 891 + WSJT + FT8 Digital on Raspberry Pi 4
WSJT-X implements communication protocols or "modes" called FT4, FT8, JT4, JT9, JT65, QRA64, ISCAT, MSK144, and WSPR, as well as one called Echo for detecting and measuring your own radio signals reflected from the Moon. These modes were all designed for making reliable, confirmed QSOs under extreme weak-signal conditions.
JT4, JT9, JT65, and QRA64 use nearly identical message structure and source encoding (the efficient compression of standard messages used for minimal QSOs). They use timed 60-second T/R sequences synchronized with UTC. JT65 and QRA64 were designed for EME ("moonbounce") on the VHF/UHF bands; JT65 has also proved popular and effective for worldwide QRP communication at HF. JT9 is optimized for the LF, MF, and HF bands. It is about 2 dB more sensitive than JT65 while using less than 10% of the bandwidth. With either JT9 or JT65, world-wide QSOs are possible with power levels of a few watts and compromise antennas. JT4 and QRA64 are optimized for EME on the VHF and higher bands, and especially the microwave bands from 2.3 to 24 GHz.
FT4 and FT8 are operationally similar but use T/R cycles only 7.5 and 15 s long, respectively. MSK144 is designed for Meteor Scatter on the VHF bands. These modes offer enhanced message formats with support for nonstandard callsigns and some popular contests.
As described more fully on its own page, WSPR mode implements a protocol designed for probing potential propagation paths with low-power transmissions. WSPR is fully implemented within WSJT-X, including programmable "band-hopping".
FT8 — the latest digital bauble to capture the imagination of the Amateur Radio community — has been luring away many of those already using the popular JT65 “weak-signal” mode. FT8 is included in a beta release of WSJT-X, version 1.8.0-rc1.

Oklahoma Ice Storm Leaves 300,000 Without Power
An abnormally early but powerful ice storm has crippled large swaths of Oklahoma, causing power outages for hundreds of thousands and toppling thousands of trees.
The mix of rain, snow, sleet, freezing rain and gusty winds, which first struck on Monday night, caught public utility companies unprepared for the massive power losses. And restoring service remains difficult as weather forecasts indicate more freezing rain will continue to batter the state through Wednesday, causing even greater damage.
"Additional weight on tree limbs caused by ice accumulating on leaves has resulted in severe tree damage and limbs coming into contact with energized lines," Public Service Company of Oklahoma officials said in a statement Tuesday.
They added: "Due to continued ice, sleet, freezing rain and high winds, we're unable to provide specific information on when service will be restored."
PSO officials said more than 650 workers, including line workers, tree crews and support staff, were dedicated to restoring power safely and as quickly as possible. An additional 385 workers from outside the area are expected to arrive in stages.
Power lines, already sagging under the weight of sometimes 2-inch thick ice casings, continue to crash over homes and other buildings, setting many of them ablaze. The Oklahoma City Fire Department has been issuing updates on new fires since the storm descended on Oklahoma City.

You use a non-resonate length of wire for the driven elements, typically 41′, 35.5′, or 29′, and optionally a 1/4 λ wire for a counterpoise, 35′ length counterpoise works well for all bands. It is designed to wind the attached wires onto the device to store it as a small compact unit.
This antenna will require the use of a tuner. The autotuners in the Elecraft KX-2, KX-3, Icom IC-703, and our manual Multi Z Tuner have all been tested and work very well. The antenna has optimum efficiency at 20m and will be an S unit less in performance at the 40m and 10m ends.
We provide all the components except the antenna wire and counterpoise wire. You use what you have available. We recommend anything from 20awg to 26awg. Two holes are provided for you to tie down or suspend the device depending on your circumstances.
compact portable wire antenna for backyard or portable SOTA use. It uses an integral 9:1 voltage balun that matches your unbalanced 50 ohm impedance input to a 450 ohm impedance unbalanced long wire. It will easily handle 10 watts.
We provide all captive stainless steel hardware for the antenna and counterpoise connections. There is a board mounted female BNC for connection to your tuner. On a difficulty scale of 1 to 5, 5 being the most difficult, this is rated at 2 or 3 depending on your experience
