Biblically Training Children | John Angell James | ECM
It is perfectly clear that a child, before he can speak, is susceptible of2moral training. The conscience, or moral sense, may by a judicious woman be developed soon af-ter, if not before, the child has spent his first birthday. So early may he be made todistinguish between what his mother considers right and wrong, between whatwill please and what will displease her. Why, the brute creatures will do this; andif they can be taught this, may not very young children? It is admitted that thereis more of reason in many brutes than in very young children.
The Christian Life is to be rejected by men and be hated by all for the sake of the truth and obedience to Christ. Many think holiness is to obtain heaven when our holiness and dedication to Christ is because it is our new nature. If any man is in Christ He will enter heaven by the sacrifice of Christ and not of His own works. To Him that works is the reward not reckoned as grace but of debt the bible teaches. Our service comes from gratitude for what has been done in us and our devotion to obedience to the word comes from the spirit of Christ working in us both to will and to do of His good pleasure

MOTHER!The name that is associated in every virtuous mind with all thatis amiable and delightful. Mother! Most tender, endearing, and expres-sive of all human appellations!1A title employed equally by the royalprince, the sage2philosopher, and the untutored3peasant—by the savage and thecivilized in all nations and through all generations. “And I will put my spirit within you.”—Ezekiel 36:27
FROM the text that is before us…I draw, and I think very conclusively, the argument that if God in His covenant made with His people has promised to put His Spirit within them, it must be absolutely necessary that
this promise should have been made. And it must be absolutely necessary also to our salvation that every one
of us should receive the Spirit of God…We start then by laying down this proposition: the work of the Holy Spirit.

By this the Reformers intended, in the first place, to deny the Romish doctrine of subjective[1] justification. That is, that
justification consists in an act of God making the sinner subjectively holy. Romanists confound or unite justification and
sanctification. They define justification as “the remission of sin and infusion of new habits of grace.” By remission of sin
they mean not simply pardon, but the removal of everything of the nature of sin from the soul. Justification, therefore,
with them, is purely subjective, consisting in the destruction of sin and the infusion[2] of holiness.
