March 1, 1781 - the Second Continental Congress put into effect the Articles of Confederation as the law of the land, making it the first Constitution for the United States. The Articles have been mostly thrown in the dustbin of history, but doing so skips over essential, foundational principles of the Founders and Old Revolutionaries.
In 1791, James Madison gave two major speeches on the National Bank, opposing it primarily on grounds that it wasn’t a power expressly delegated in the Constitution. He also rejected claims that used the general welfare and necessary and proper clauses, along with the power to borrow money, and the preamble.

Even though many people credit Thomas Jefferson for the natural rights principles in the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson himself pointed out that he didn’t invent those ideas. Instead, he wrote, he had adopted the "harmonizing sentiments of the day," views which were widely accepted and understood. From 1764 to 1776, Americans produced a rich series of pamphlets, resolutions and speeches which he based those principles on.
