Welcome back to The Game Collection!
I've been focusing an awful lot on RPGs made by classic developers. They made the classics I grew up playing, the games that inspired my love for the genre. The games that inspired this series of reviews. But I think it’s time we check out a game that was also inspired by these classics. The developer Something Classic sent me a copy of Shadows of Adam for review, so let's see how they did! Is Shadows of Adam itself a mere shadow cast by the games that came before it? Or does it stand on its own legs as classic all on its own? I am SuperDerek and this is Shadows of Adam!
Shadows of Adam is a turn-based Japanese-style RPG that's available to play on PC and Nintendo Switch. It was developed by Something Classic after a successful Kickstarter campaign, raising over $20,000. Shadows of Adam launched originally in 2017 for PC, and was just ported over this year to the Nintendo Switch, which is the version I played for this review.
The story of Shadows of Adam follows Kellan, son of the hero Orazio and his childhood friend and adopted sister Azrael. Several years ago, Orazio set out on a journey, never to be heard from again, leaving behind his children, and a dark secret. And as the world begins to slip into darkness, the blight afflicting the world spreads and infects the land. Is in this world that our story picks up. Kellan and Azzy go exploring the Tangle, a treacherous and poisonous gnarl of twisted thorns and vines, in search of the source of the blight. Along the way they come across Curtis, a powerful monk who helps the duo out. Upon discovering and defeating a monstrous carnivorous plant, they find a magical tome buried within a tree trunk. It is then that a vision of Orazio appears, pleading to Azrael to help him, before vanishing. With that, our small band of characters go off on a journey to find Orazio, and get to the bottom of that creepy magical tome.
The game gradually leads the player through several towns and dungeons, in search of magical crystals, magical artifacts, and running from an evil prince, hell-bent on capturing Azzy for her sparkling magical abilities. Along the way we uncover the history of magic, the origins of artifacts, and meet several fun and interesting characters along the way.
The overarching story of the game itself isn't where the writing of this game truly shines though. That would be in the dialog. Shadows of Adam is very self-aware, and breaks the 4th wall often. The writing is clever and whimsical enough to keep readers engaged, but never so off-the-rails as to border on parody. Some of the most charming and memorable characters are the pirates obsessed with cleaning, for example. Shadows of Adam walks a fine line, and in doing so tells a story that is accessible to newc

Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana for Nintendo Switch is an Action RPG that was originally released on the PlayStation Vita and PS4 in 2016. The game has recently been ported to the Nintendo Switch, and this is my review of Ys VIII!
Ys VIII is the latest in a long-running series of action RPGs that date back to the beginning of the RPG genre. Developed by Nihon Falcom and published by Nipon Ichi Software, YIII continues the tradition of fast action-packed combat, and above all else, fun! The game was originally released on the PS Vita and PS4, but has recently been brought over to the Nintendo Switch, which is the version I'm playing for this review.
In Ys VIII you play as Adol Christen the Red-haired Swordsman. The story of Ys VIII takes place between the events of Ys V and VI, but it's important to note that you don't really have to have played any of the previous games to pick up and play Y's VIII. The game picks up with Adol and his best friend Dogi aboard the Lombardia, a passenger ship headed for Eresia. Unfortunately, misfortune upon the high seas sends the Lombardia to the bottom of the sea after an attack from a giant squid. Adol, Dogi, and the passengers aboard the Lombardia awaken upon a deserted island, a cursed island, from which no person has ever returned. It's up to Adol to try to gather the scattered castaways, fortify a settlement against the wilderness of the island, and uncover the mystery of this bizarre land.
The concept of survival on a mysterious island is one I haven't seen play out too many times in RPG form, and when it does it's usually only for a few short hours at most. This trope lends itself well to the exploration aspect of RPGs that I've been missing for a while. I think that towards the second half of the game, the story started to feel a little drawn out, relying to a disappointing degree the convenient amnesia trope to keep the player in the dark, which felt a little tired. Aside from that caveat, the story was well paced!
Aside from the unique setting for Ys VIII, a lot of the story of the game was stuff we've seen and played a few times before. And I'm not saying this is bad, but I wouldn't expect the game to be challenging anyone's worldviews any time soon. To put it simply, if this game was an anime, it would be a shonen, and there's nothing wrong with that! It's the kind of game where you can sit down, plug in a few hours, and put it down easily. This in turn lends itself well to playing on the Nintendo Switch or PS Vita. That said, the characters are lovable, the humor was hit and miss unless you're a glut for flatulence jokes in which case it was a gas! And there were definitely some sad moments in the game that reminds the player of what's at stake, a kind of stark contrast to the upbeat story up to that point

Huge thanks to Jimmy Hapa for helping out with this Granstream Saga Review!
Buy Granstream Saga using this affiliate link to support the channel! https://amzn.to/2LLeJNi
Developed by Shade and published by THQ, the Granstream Saga was released for the original PlayStation in 1997. Between the generic name, no-name developer and let's face it, poor-name publisher, I'm not sure I know of a less interesting combination of words. But if you're still awake, it might interest you to know that the game was one of the first fully polygonal RPGs ever made, and in fact, debuted at #1 on the sales charts in Japan, dethroning the long-standing Final Fantasy VII.

Are you a fan of Summon Night, or more specifically, the Swordcraft Story spinoff titles on GameBoy Advance? If so, Maglam Lord may in fact be the game you’ve been waiting for. Welcome back to Experience Points, a less formal more laid back series of reviews where I talk about games I’ve played a bit of but haven’t yet finished. And today we’re taking a look at Maglam Lord.

Welcome back to The Game Collection! Today’s video is brought to you today by the supporters of the show over on Patreon, and subscribers on Twitch. Everyone got together and created a list of games they wanted to see a review of, no game was off the table. And then they voted decided which of those games I would review next. The competition was fierce, and included games like Golden Sun, the Tales series, and dozens of others but in the end, one game slowly but steadily rose through the ranks. One game was chosen above all the others. And now, finally, after spending dozens of hours playing through it, I can see exactly why it was chosen. And now it’s time to dig into it! I am SuperDerek, and this is Star Ocean: The Second Story!
Star Ocean: The Second Story was the first Star Ocean game to come to the United States and was, in fact, the way a great many people first experienced this epic series. However as the name would imply this is actually the second entry in the series. Second Story is a follow up the Super Famicom release of Star Ocean, which wasn’t officially localized and published in the west until its PSP re-release: Star Ocean: First Departure… But that’s a story for another day.
The series has an interesting pedigree, with many of its creators having worked on Tales of Phantasia prior. When several team members split from Wolfteam, they formed their own development studio, Tri-Ace, and have been making Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile games ever since. Because of this, you can see the influences in the game as it plays out in a mixture of action RPG and menu-based battle mechanics. However, as the name might imply, this game isn’t exactly your run-of-the-mill medieval fantasy.
The game opens with presenting the player with a choice, you may choose which protagonist the game will follow throughout its duration. This blind choice will affect a few things down the road, such as recruitable characters, which bits of the story the player will be privy to, and the like. The choice is between Claude and Rena, two characters who at a glance are worlds apart. Because Rena has healing magic, I opted for her story. But it didn’t take long before the two were united.
While visiting a forest near her home town, Rena is attacked by a beast! Seemingly from nowhere, Claude intervenes, “sword” flashing. To Rena, he’s a vision of the foretold hero, destined to save the world from calamity. And as luck would have it, there just so happens to be a calamity afflicting the world in the form of the Sorcery Globe, which fell from the sky and is causing all sorts of problems. Claude, oblivious to this apparent destiny and not wanting to be rude and also not really having anywhere else to go, follows Rena into town.
