Microphone Only Recording Left Channel, Solution (FAQ Series)
In this FAQ entry, I explain why your microphone is only recording to the left channel, or right channel, and tell you how to fix the problem in your recording software or streaming software.
DEFINITIONS (which I should have included in the video)
STEREO: A stereo signal has multiple channels of audio, each of which can be reproduced by separate speakers. Meaning in a 2 speaker setup (or in headphones) the left speaker will be producing a different sound than the right.
MONO: A mono signal is made up of a single sound source that is reproduced by all speakers simultaneously. This means what you hear in the left speaker, you will also hear the same in the right speaker.

Today, I review the Neewer NW-3. A cheap, budget, XLR condenser mic that will set you back around $20. Other than a slight high frequency noise that will be unnoticeable to most, I think this microphone sounds pretty good.

Today I review a competitor to the Electro Voice 635A, Rode Reporter, and Mono HM-M2, the Electro Voice RE50/B. This is an omnidirectional dynamic microphone meant for Electronic News Gathering and Reporting, and it does that rather well. It focuses on the human vocal frequency and not much else. It also does a great job at handling noise rejection and plosive rejection to ensure that there will be as few distractions as possible.

Today I review an amazing industry standard studio workhorse mic, the AKG C414 XLS. This is a multi pattern condenser with 9 polar patters, 6dBa self noise, and a max SPL 158dB. In my testing, this mic worked well on pretty much everything I through at it. It may not be my favorite on everything, but for an Austrian sounding mic, I think it’s outstanding.

Today I review one of the best microphones ever made, the Neumann U87 Ai. This is a 3 polar pattern large diaphragm mic that is very expensive. It has a controlled low-end, a forward mid section, and a smooth but detailed top end. It is very unforgiving in terms of tone as it captures what you put in front of it and doesn’t do much to help you out. I also compare it to the Neewer NW700, AT2020, Neat King Bee, sE X1, Rode NT1, Shure SM7b, RE20, CAD E100s, KSM32, TLM102, Mojave MA201 FET, OC818, KSM44a, C414 XLII, and TLM103.

Today I review a Large Capsule Condenser Microphone, the MXL V67G. This mic sounds pretty nice for the price, but it has some harsh higher frequencies. It would be ideal for recording demos but will likely not work well for the majority of voice over, podcast, or let's players.
