7 Days To Die a21.1 | Day 3: Building (digging?) a Base!
Spent the day in day 3 harvesting and building with a short jaunt into the town for a cooking pot. Building in the wilderness seemed to be the ticket since no zombies bothered me at all!
Vala is the main programming language used by the ElementaryOS team to develop apps for ElementaryOS and Pantheon.
Unlike many common programming languages, the Vala compiler does not compile Vala code into machine code. Instead, Vala code is compiled to C code with Gnome's Gobject libraries. The C code is then compiled to machine code and used to produce an executable. All of this functionality happens within the compiler and the programmer doesn't have to worry about it.
Vala is primarily used for developing GTK apps however there's nothing technically preventing it from being used for any other application. Since Vala is trans-compiled into C code, technically an application written in Vala has to potential to be as performant as an application written in C.
Vala's main target is GTK+ / GTK3 but it can be used with GTK2.

Playing on the "new" map called Last Light which is a COD-like dense city map. Apparently it was a community map so it's not actually new.
Overall, it was a bit of a disappointment. Not sure which to blame, the map, the match settings or the AI. My main gripe about Insurgency is that the matches go on for waaaay too long and the AI glitch really amplified that here.
First, there are way too many players for such tiny "hold" boundaries.
Second, the whole map is closed off and maze-like which makes it feel like a discount COD map.
And lastly, the AI is busted (and apparently always has been??) on that one hold point. Again, I am baffled that the developers just left the map in there like that. Apparently this map is popular in PVP but why not pull it from co-op until it is fixed?
Round 1: 0:00
Round 2: 3:16
Round 3: 4:38
Round 4: 7:18
Round 5 (Where the AI really breaks): 8:39

Learn how to install & play Elder Scrolls Online on Linux - addons/mods included!
Elder Scrolls Online is one of the many Windows games that runs pretty much flawless on Linux thanks to Steam Play. The SteamPlay feature of Steam is actually a Windows compatibility layer called Proton (Wine) which integrates everything together nicely.

Attempting to theme and configure the Budgie desktop just the way I like it.
Part 1 of this video is here - https://youtu.be/PF6SQa_r9l8
Last time I looked at Budgie I had issues with a few things that weren't Budgie's fault at all. Certain things, like right-click being broken, are still an issue but I figured a couple things out:
- The issue with Raven was the theme I was using
- The issue with search not finding Flatpaks was because of my default shell (fish)
I'm still not a fan of how tightly-coupled Budgie is to Gnome. For example, on KDE or Mate, I could stretch the desktop wallpaper to fit the monitor but since Budgie uses Gnome's settings, there's not an easy built-in way to do that.
Sorry about the lack of timestamps - this video is kinda all over the place and the timestamps I had didn't make much sense. Oh well!

Let me show you how to get setup on Debian Testing with KDE and some of the tweaks I make to it. I use a few alternative programs to the common known ones like apt and bash, and I like to setup my systems with zramswap instead of traditional disk swap.
A list of the tools and packages I use can be found below the timestamps!

Let's talk about why I switched to Gnome and how I theme my Gnome desktop and what extensions I use.
Before everybody gets excited, I'm still on openSUSE Leap 15! OpenSUSE hasn't let me down and I have no intention to hop to another distro!
KDE, however, did let me down with Kontact and generally poor notification support on the desktop. I know KDE has notification support built into the panel but it's just not good. Notifications get hidden and are easily cleared by accident. Its just bad UX design all around.
For the record, I did test out other KDE distros like Kubuntu and KDE Neon (not Manjaro though) just to make sure it wasn't the KDE version I was running. Same issues on those distros.
And before people rush to tell me to try out Cinnamon, I already have. I feel Cinnamon's UX is straight out of 2010 and it's just bad.
And yes I'm aware that pretty much every DE has a notification center. I feel Gnome's is the best, followed closely by Pantheon's. KDE's is just bad.
The only other GTK-based desktop I have any interest in is Pantheon & ElementaryOS but as I said in the video, I prefer the "Windows-style" of a bottom panel over the MacOS style of a dock with a top panel.

On episode 23 of Distro Delves we're looking at Lubuntu 20.04 which is a flavor of Ubuntu that uses Lxqt.
I don't normally do episodes on flavors or spins of other distros but this was requested by a Patron so I was happy to oblige.
Lubuntu itself was fine but Lxqt is pretty underwhelming aside for its tiny footprint.
Unless you are using severely resource-constrained hardware, I see absolutely no reason to use Lubuntu over Ubuntu Mate or Xubuntu. You lose a huge amount of functionality just to save 100, maybe 200 mb of memory at idle.
