Tent Peg Test | Vertical or Angled Placement Best.
Is vertical or angled placement of tent pegs better?
Thought I would try out this idea after doing some research on the internet which seems to show that it is actually better to put your tent stakes in vertical rather than at 35-45 degrees. interesting video below that got me looking into this further.
Again based on the results so far, further and more detailed testing is required. I had also tested the Delta anchors several more times but the thing about this type of test is that it is a sustained pull. In real life the tent would be buffeted and it is this tugging motion which would loosens normal pegs which then eventually come out. This won't likely happen with a delta style tent pegs based on my own real world camping experience.
These are just some simple tests and your mileage may vary depending on the ground type and weather conditions.
After further testing off camera this was the average of the two best pegs I had brought with me.
Overnight winter camping trip with my Robens Starlight 2 tent.
I'll also be sharing some recent trip failures, like battling wind gusts and making the tough call to bail from the mountains due to unexpected weather.

This was my first ever wild camping trip to the Lost Valley in Glencoe and it did not disappoint!
The lost valley or hidden valley is a one-of-a-kind special place, tucked away in between the mountains of Glencoe.
Please be aware that the route is a steep and rocky path with some mild scrambling; with great care needed especially in bad or wet weather.

Despite their modest height, walking and climbing in any mountains may be made treacherous by their latitude and exposure to weather systems. Even in summer, conditions can be atrocious; thick fog, strong winds, driving rain and freezing summit temperatures are commonplace.
The content shown in my films are just my own opinions, thoughts and as a way to record my trips. WARNING - Walking and hiking in the mountains & hills can be dangerous and is done entirely at your own risk.

Backpacking & wild Camping - Spectacular 'Stac Pollaidh' Summit Camp.
It was the chance to get out and do some more landscape photography whilst completing a hike for a summit camp I had wanted to do for a few years now.
Many would hate the thought of spending the night alone on top of a mountain but there is also a growing number of people who love the challenge and solitude.
This is the typical opportunity I really enjoy where I can combine two of my passions, wild camping and landscape photography.
The mountain I planned on climbing was Stac Pollaidh which is a mountain in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland. The peak displays a stunning rocky crest of Torridonian sandstone, with many pinnacles and steep gullies.
Stac Pollaidh can be climbed in less than 3 hours by any relatively fit person. From the car park on the shore of Loch Lurgainn the path leads directly up, under the spires of the crest.
About 200 m from the road the path splits; one may choose either since both meet up on the far side of the hill, from where it is only a short distance to the summit ridge.
Once on the ridge the true summit lies about 300 m to the west. However to reach it one must scramble over several rocky pinnacles, and a bit of scrambling experience and good head for heights is required.
The sandstone pinnacles are impressive and are rated in Scotland as second only to the ones on Quiraing on the Isle of Skye.
One of the key beneifits of visiting this fantastic small mountain is the views and ability to photograph some of the key mountains in the area such as ‘Cul Mor’ & ‘Suilven’ as well as stunning views across to the Atlantic.
As always thanks for watching and if you enjoyed my film please remember to like and support me by subscribing. Atb Ray

Winter Hillwalking in Scotland | - Ben Vorlich at Loch Lomond.
Headed up to 'Loch Lomond' to attempt some winter hillwalking and climb to the summit of 'Ben Vorlich'. However the weather and poor route planning beat me in the end. Not all was lost though as the views were still spectacular and a visit to the dam is worthwhile in itself.
'Ben Vorlich' towers above the west side of the head of Loch Lomond; although close to the road its steep sides mean it is still a tough ascent. The 'Inveruglas' hydro-electric power station is on its eastern flanks, with pipelines running through the mountain from 'Loch Sloy'.

Backpacking, Wild Camping, Hunting or Fishing - OLIGHT H2R NOVA, Head Torch Unboxing.
This is another short film of a product I received from OLIGHT to review.
One of the most important items to take whilst out backpacking and wild camping in the autumn and winter is a good head torch.
The one I had used over the last couple of years was extremely heavy so I was searching through YouTube reviews to find an alternative.
Just last week I was contacted and asked if I wanted to take a look at the new H2R Nova torch and give my views on it for use out backpacking and wild camping.
As I have only had this torch a short period of time I will use it over the coming months and give my final verdict later in the year.
However so far it looks a well-made unit and works well.

Another early morning landscape photography trip to 'Rannoch Moor' in Scotland.
After a few days of heavy snow the entire place had been turned into a stunning winter wonderland. With a favourable weather forecast we had hoped to get a stunning sunrise either across the moor or the Black Mount opposite.
We had no idea how deep the snow was and actually took us by surprise and made for a hard slog hiking about on the frozen moor. However we were a handful of photographers that had braved the trip up on the icy roads and had this stunning winter wonderland almost entirely to ourselves.
The trip also let me share my trip with another landscape photographer Alistair Mann and the lucky chance to bump into a full time professional photographer Julian Elliot. You can check out there links listed below.
Days out in the Scottish scenery don’t get much better than this and I am really hoping that the snow returns and that wasn’t going to be the only major snowfall of the season.

Backpacking & Wild Camping - Trying the 'MSR Access 1' Four season, solo tent.
Decided to return my 'Wechel Exogen' tent and managed to get hold of a discount 'MSR Access 1' to try out and start testing.
On this backpacking trip I met up with Robin who has the channel 'Walk With Wallace' for a trip high up into 'Glen Lyon to visit the 'Praying Hands' for an overnight wild camp.
The forecast was for a little bit of wind and the occasional rain shower. Not as heavy as the weekend before but still ideal for a first night test.
The trip did let me get another Munro, 'Stuchd an Lochain' ticked off the list which was a fairly short walk.
Views across 'Giorra' dam and over to Rannoch moor where spectacular.

Terra Nova | Southern Cross 1Tent | Four-Season Ultralight.
...
Thought I would have a look at the ‘Terra Nova Southern Cross 1’ tent that looks ideal for wild camping and backpacking.
From my short time with the tent it does look a well manufactured and sturdy tent. However like most tents the proof will be once it has been put under some serious weather conditions. Only then can we see if it is suitable for multi season use as specified and see if any potential design faults or weaknesses appear.
My measured weight for the tent was 1.8kg
WARNING - Builders bum footage at certain sections. Apologies, should have worn my hiking trousers.
Manufacturer’s data and information on the tent below.
___________________________________________________
The Southern Cross 1 tent is a completely freestanding lightweight tent suitable for 4 season backpacking.
The design takes its inspiration from the award winning Laser range of lightweight tents but includes an additional pole to provide extra stability and structure. Pitching is quick and easy as the flysheet and inner are erected as one and the flysheet and groundsheet are fully taped providing complete waterproof protection.
Due to its 100% freestanding nature, pegging is kept to a minimum when optimising its strength / weight ratio. There is a spacious inner and porch; the porch door can be fixed open in several ways to provide the most suitable weather protection for the current conditions.
