"Kawafuchi Sensei" provides a variety of content:
-- Iconoclastic movie reviews and advice for writing scripts. As a former development executive and current college instructor, I started recording movie reviews as a way to amuse my students and encourage them to do their own videos. Somehow that would up as this channel!
-- Interviews with industry pros. These are a series of interviews recorded while I ran a grant for the California Community College Chancellor's Office that provided information to students looking to break into the entertainment industry. Most of these interviews cover jobs in entertainment that aren't generally known to those not in the industry.
-- Various clips from American television documentaries, movies of the week, and other assorted tidbits that are assumed to be in public domain.
-- Various clips from Japanese television, most circa 1978-1983 when I lived there. Most are scenes from American movies dubbed in Japanese. Most of these dubs are different from those found on physical media. Other videos feature the commentaries that often came before those films as well as commercials that were in the initial telecasts.
I used to have a large collection of Japanese music programs and suspense thriller movies of the week. These have been removed for now because of copyright strikes.

This channel is dedicated to all sorts of content surrounding the entertainment industry. It was originally formed as a repository of content created for the California Community College Chancellor's Office Department of Economic and Workforce Development Doing What Matters Initiative. Running from 2013-2018, numerous events and assets were created to enhance anyone interested in entertainment as a career to find the best career pathways in. In order to support that effort, a series of videos were created that dealt with "below-the-line" or "crafts" positions, which are often not taught in regular curriculum.
The program further expanded to include digital assets that might be amusing to general students. Dan Watanabe, founder of this channel, was a grant director.

JAPANESE LANGUAGE CONTENT: Having attended high school in Japan, channel owner Dan Watanabe found this also to be a place where interesting tidbits from his days in Japan could provide a nostalgic backwards look for his former classmates -- as well as his current students. Further, this could be of cultural interest to westerners.

"That's Entertainment" was a movie made partially because MGM was about to sell off its backlot, and partially because the studio was at the burnt ends. Utilizing some clip bits from previous compilations, celebrity interviews, and clips featuring the studio's classic musical numbers, the movie was released to shocking box office and a renewed interest in musicals (which, you may recall, were in doldrums following the failure of many high priced adaptations during the late 60s. We discuss the film and its timing during the height of the nostalgia craze.
And yes, that IS the telecast of the Japanese TV version running at the bottom of the screen. It's discussed near the end.

It seemed to have everything... a trashy Harold Robbins novel based on the Lana Turner/ Johnny Stompamato murder case; director Edward Dmytryk, fresh off his triumphant version of Robbins' "The Carpetbaggers;" the irresistible casting of Susan Hayward, Bette Davis (who legendarily hated each other), Mike Conners (a couple of years before "Mannix"), and newcomer Joey Heatherton. Written by John Michael Hayes ("Rear Window," "Butterfield 8"). Yet, it didn't work, not even in an unintentionally funny way. Why?

By the 1960s, the film musical had either evolved or devolved into extremely expensive adaptations of Broadway hits. Some of these adaptations, such as West Side Story, My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, and Oliver would go on to win Best Picture. Others would be such colossal failures that they killed the genre more or less for good. In this episode, Hisato, Tye and Dan discuss these big musicals and a host of other things associated with them.

THIS IS A REUPLOAD OF A VIDEO MADE OVER A YEAR AGO ORIGINALLY POSTED ON A DIFFERENT CHANNEL. MORE VIDEOS HAVE BEEN UPLOADED ON MY SENSEI DAN ALL VIDEOS PLAYLIST AS "UNLISTED." PLEASE CHECK THERE FOR OTHERS!
"Proof of the Man" (人間の証明) was the 2nd film of Kadokawa Pictures, formed by a maverick publisher who wanted to revitalize the Japanese film industry -- at least financially. That he did, although few of the movies made it out of the country. Perhaps one of the reasons is that they tended to be very racist toward non-Japanese. "Proof of the Man" is one of the most controversial. We go over that controvery... is it deserved?
Parts were shot on location in New York City during the blacksploitation era, and it is interesting to see how foreigners viewed the city at that time. It is not a positive view!

Please see the following updates on the channel!
OLDER "SENSEI DAN VIDEO COMMENTARIES: My older commentaries from a previous channel are being reuploaded here now. They may be found in the SENSEI DAN ALL VIDEOS Playlist. I am putting them up as Unlisted so they won't be confused with the newer content. Please check them out!
JAPANESE MUSIC AND DRAMA TITLES: Original copyright owners have become FAR more strict with pulling down old uploads. For the time being, I am just putting up classic Japanese commentaries from the days of prime time movie showcases. These often but not always include embedded commercials from original telecasts I recorded. Depending on YouTube and the copyright holders' 's future policies, I may try uploading music and dramas again in the future.
