In 'I Can't Get You Out Of My Head', a recent Adam Curtis documentary, he mentions that in the west, scientists are beginning to ask whether the very idea of everyone having an integrated self was actually a fiction. He tells how, in the 1980s, a new group of behavioural psychologists had argued that what human beings called their “self” was not fully in control of their actions. Now, these psychologists have been joined by neuroscientists, who say they have discovered something even stranger. Which is that, inside their brains, human beings have all kinds of different selves, which the conscious mind has no awareness of, at all. Sometimes you feel a lack of passion; sometimes you might feel motivated. No matter how your day goes, you could ask yourself this question: "What's the point of my life?" If you dare to write down what you actually think, it could be really funny to see how much your thoughts change every day. Yesterday I thought, there's no point to living. Because I will forever be part of the system, and be stuck. I wasn't making sense of things, and I felt that I was just sleepwalking. Today, I believe that I'm here because I want to find beauty and surprises in my life journey. I want to see the different colours that sunlight brings. I want to drink milk tea while looking at cherry blossoms. I want to experience the things I never imagined existed. I want to meet the people I never imagined meeting. Sometimes I think life is about loving and being loved. I think I'm telling myself different stories about what my life is, and those stories are changing every day. If you want to take a close look at what you feel about your life, you could ask yourself this question and write down your answers every day, to see how much, and how often, your thoughts change.
