How to grow salad greens and Microgreens with Ebb and flow system. - Day 47
This video gives an idea of what plants look like going on seven weeks into the system operation that I created. This is an Ebon flow system that runs on a pump with two air stones and increasingly potent nutrient mix. The system runs out of a 27 gallon tub drain tray sits on sits above it. Inside the grow tray or 17 different plants including arugula, basil, kale and some lettuces.
I was starting to miss the microgreens in particular the wheat grass and a sunflower greens so I decided to grow a little tray and Ebon flow for that is just fantastic.
I put soaked seeds on just some coconut choir and then placed an empty Tree on top. I come in today the tray is raised in the greens are already looking good to go after just being selling a couple days ago. This is really good stuff and some lessons to be learned here for creating food quickly. Not just any food healthy food. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=av7jyetMwUE
Happy New Year
I want to share that the most consistent training in my life for the past 43 years has been strength training. As we head into the 2020's requires us to be in shape and being in shape to me means being strong. This is what has worked for me and I have been able to do it in any environment anywhere on the three continents I've traveled. Gardening is great but it requires muscles and sweat. In my case, there's a lot of blood and cuss words that went into the yard building too.
Get some strength training into your routine and you will be lighter on your feet. Below is my current routine and at https:tonyteolis.com there's more. Thanks for watching and please share what you do to get strong. Get prepared.

The first free people controlled fire. Let's chat.
I was inspired to build a Dakota Fire Pit in the backyard this evening due to recent events around the world. Being able to provide your own energy is like harvesting from the garden. More importantly, both go together. Food and cooking.
I cut a lot of wood during summer and fall and wanted to test my fire-starting skills. I haven't lit a fire in years and this was a good place to gauge skills and preps. I do a lot of camping but cook mostly with propane. I don't do any winter camping and need to start. This is a good first step because I learned a few things. I started the fire with flint, dryer lint, wood shavings, and kindling. It did not catch as I anticipated. I then switched to cotton balls and the fire started right away.
Dave Canterbury does a great job of showing how I dug my hole. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyDUqz3PxJY&t=140s
There are many more YT videos on how to make Dakota Fire Holes and I recommend watching a few before doing this for the first time. Once you have made your video, reference this video, and let's arrange some fireside chats.

From 2014
I finally get a chance to share with you a view of the food forest I have envisioned growing. The backyard is a web of interconnected systems. It is not a forest yet as full production will take several more years. There are apple and peach tress that have to come online yet and the goji, goumi, juneberry, and other berries have some time before they will become productive. In the meantime there is still plenty to keep us all busy. we have about 12 pounds of raspberries in the freezer that will become part of a wine or mead or and of course some jam. That's actually cooking up right now. The blackberries are producing and more were planted this year to aid in the proliferation of berries in the yard.
If you have been paying attention at all the goal is to have the sweetest home in the neighborhood. The grapes are entering year two and the battle with beetles has not yet abetted. The bees are out pollinating and gathering and the mason bees seemed to be a great experiment despite all of the anthropomorphic harm that unintentionally came their way. Cocoons are waiting until September for harvest and a fall/winter fridge storage. Garlic aroma fills the guest bedroom as that is where about a hundred cloves are curing. The shallots are curing the garage. Basil paste is being stored without haste and the production of two versions of that plant Chinese and Italian are ongoing.
But enough about how the production is moving along and keeping us busy. Today's video is a realization of a vision from a non-productive sloping and barren backyard to one that is fun to mold into the fantasy food forest it is fast becoming. Enjoy and stick around for parts 2-4. Thanks and let me know what you think and your questions on how you can do the same.

This is a cool video I made of the top bar hive at night. The plexiglass window allows me to take a look inside this busy hive for some never before seen shots of how this hive operates. Everyone is working in the hive. This is certainly not a place where they celebrate happy hour.

This video was taken two days after I expanded the hive to a total of thirteen top bars. The bees are already drawing out new comb and they have plenty of room for expansion. Later in the evening the video shows how well the guard bees protect their home from unwanted pests and predators. I may put a robber screen on it later to aid in protection from the European hornets I have seen occasionally. Enjoy the video and learn how to inspect a honey bee hive at night. Now if I can only figure out how to do similar observations of the Langstroth hives. See plans below for to build a top bar hive with an observation. Something I insist on doing if you have the opportunity.
