Join us for Who's Afraid of Opera: The Magic of Mozart!
“If Mozart was possible, then the word ‘impossible’ should be eliminated from our vocabulary.” So said the 20-century Austrian composer Ernst Toch. And he was right! As San Francisco Opera’s Dramaturg Emeritus Kip Cranna will take us a musical tour through the full spectrum of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s operatic genius using video examples (with English subtitles) to illustrate Mozart’s gift for capturing the wide range of human nature in his music, his skill at musical characterization, and his matchless talent for drama. We’ll examine the early influences on this famous child prodigy, follow the course of his all-too-short career, and sample highlights of his most famous works, including The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and The Magic Flute, as well as some of his lesser-known gems.

Annabelle Gurwitch is an actress, activist, humorist and author of five books, including the New York Times bestseller and Thurber Prize finalist I See You Made an Effort. She’s written for The New Yorker, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal and Hadassah among other publications. In addition to writing, Gurwitch was the long-time cohost of the cult TV hit Dinner and a Movie on TBS, where a movie was aired and a recipe for a dish with a name relating to the movie was prepared live.
