SPOILER: Switch from SHR to RAID... In this in performance review, I go through the process of switching my setup from SHR to RAID to let you know how much faster a vanilla RAID 6 setup is compared to the recommended system default of SHR. RESULTS For transferring 35GB of data. Synology NAS SHR2 Encrypted Volume: 25 minutes Synology NAS RAID6 Unencrypted Volume: 5 and half minutes. QNAP NAS RAID6 Encrypted Volume: 2 minutes and 11 seconds. Unfortunately I didn't get round to testing RAID6 Encrypted performance on a Synology, but just a word of warning, please make sure you choose wisely when setting up your NAS, as once you go with the system default of SHR, you're stuck with it. There's no way to migrate it over to RAID. SHR does give you extra flexibility when adding different sized drives, but in my experience it is very slow. For maximum performance of course, go for a QNAP instead.
