A stock market crash occurs when a broad-based stock index such as the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, or Nasdaq Composite declines by double digits in one or more days. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 experienced their biggest percentage drop in a single day since the 1987 stock market crash, as did Britain's FTSE 100, which fell 10.87%. The crash, known as Black Monday, occurred for a variety of reasons, including the rise of computerized trading, which made it easier for panicky investors to sell stocks quickly, and stock markets around the world plummeted. Regulators and economists have identified several likely causes on October 19, such as the fact that international investors have become more active in US markets in previous years, which could explain some of the stock price spikes before the crash. The crash came after a period of relative prosperity in the Roaring Twenties as new investors poured money into the stock market. The Great Crash When the stock market lost nearly half its value in the fall of 1929, the promise of a very successful administration fell through and many Americans were plunged into financial crisis. The 1962 Kennedy Crash followed a bull run in the gold market, and when the stock market surged 27% in 1961, many investors developed a false sense of security. - The stock market reaches its pandemic peak by May 2020. The next day of trading, US stocks won back part of the losses that occurred on the day of their occurrence, increasing by more than 4%. Equity rates across all sectors of the S&P 500, except for financials, rose significantly over this period as the index corrected from record highs earlier in the year. Stocks flirted with correction territory in January and hit lows we haven't seen since March 2020. The 2020 stock market crash temporarily recovered after the Fed of New York offered at least $1.5 trillion in short-term loans to banks dollars. for March 12-13, but soon after that the market quickly resumed its fall. The latter term also refers to a situation where the market experiences a prolonged drop in prices; however, stock market crashes tend to be more abrupt. Although there is no specific numerical definition for a stock market crash, the term is usually applied to cases where major stock market indices lose more than 10% of their value in a relatively short period of time. Stock market crashes are usually the result of a variety of economic factors, including speculation, panic selling and/or economic bubbles, and can occur after an economic crisis or major catastrophic event. In other cases, which rarely happens, a crash leads to a prolonged sell-off and a prolonged bear market.
