We just spent several weeks looking at the ministry recorded in Acts for those 30 years from Pentecost and on to Paul being imprisoned in Rome.
As we remember all those events, do you ever get puzzled at how they did it? If we are not careful we can even get overwhelmed at what amazing things those saints did for God, while struggling with huge obstacles.
In fact, as I read over some of those more vivid parts of the New Testament again this week, some of the words that came to my mind were: Unbelievable, incredible & unattainable.
Isn’t that where most of us get to after a while? Unbelievable, incredible, but alas for me, unattainable! Three words frame many people’s view of Biblical living:
UNBELIEVABLE, INCREDIBLE & UNATTAINABLE
What do I mean? Think over with me what you know about just a few of those who lived across the pages of the New Testament:
The Apostle Peter was a stumbling, bumbling man who always was sticking both feet, up to the ankles, into his mouth in the Gospels.
In fact, after the 1st Lord’s Supper, one servant girl in the dark, scarred him into uttering some horrible curses and denials of Jesus.
Yet only days later he is standing up in front of 3,000 families, facing both the murderous religious establishment of Jerusalem and their guardians, the Roman army; and was no less than totally fearless.
He is never recorded as wavering again from that day onward. He faces the inevitability of personal pain and certain martyrdom with serenity. See why we think: unbelievable, incredible & unattainable?
The Apostle Paul was beaten within an inch of death in Acts 16.
He was neglected to the point of abuse, thrown into a dark, damp, bug-infested dungeon, fastened down with iron and wood stocks, and left to grow infection, burn with fever, and perhaps die.
What was the result? He started to quote and sing aloud from the Psalms. He was so convincing almost everyone who heard it wanted to become a Christian also! Unbelievable, incredible & unattainable: or is it possible to live that way?
The Apostle John was alone, imprisoned, troubled, and for all, he knew forgotten by God and man as Revelation 1 opens.
He was on a baked rock in the middle of nowhere, kind of like an ancient version of an Alcatraz or San Quentin Penitentiary.
He had already survived beatings, mobs, and jails and even lived with the scars that marked his body from the boiling oil torture the Romans had subjected him to. So what comes out of a wasted and scarred body? He is in the Spirit, worshiping God on a Sunday: in nowhere; and all alone on that island prison he gets the best look at Heaven’s beauty ever seen. Unbelievable, incredible & unattainable: or is it possible to live that way?
What do they all have in common? Only one thing: the Spirit of God is how they made it and were used so mightily.
The galaxy of unbelievable lives goes way beyond the Apostles. There are countless 1st-century saints who found their pathway colliding with the godless and belligerent Roman Society, whose lives ended in the sands of the arena, at the stake, or in ghastly martyrdom. Yet history records they went to their end singing, radiant with joy and serenely. Unbelievable, incredible & unattainable: or is it possible to live that way?

If you sift through the whole Bible’s 31,000+ verses you find that there are just about 2,040 verses with 215 specific predictions from God about the end of the world that are STILL in the process of being fulfilled.
So, the Bible contains many specific events that would signal the end of days for life on planet Earth as it has been for the past several thousand years.
Each of the prophetic signs Christ and His apostles gave is specific and not vague.

Satan is Resisting God’s Work on Earth Today
Bad, evil, dark, fearsome, and deadly are just a few terms that would describe this realm that God intentionally opens for His Church to see, comprehend, and prepare for in our daily lives.
This morning as we open our Bibles to Revelation 9, we are opening to the fifth trumpet. Just a quick glance at the map will help orient us to where we are and where we have been.
• Revelation 1 is the Risen Lord Jesus Christ, where John introduced us to Jesus Christ as He is right now, the Risen Lord of the Church He has purchased with His own blood.
• Revelation 2-3 contains the Seven Church Visits, as John records the unannounced visits Jesus made to see if the churches were following His Word, or slipping away. Only one or at the most, two of the churches were staying true to the Book left as their plan for being good and faithful servants.
• Revelation 4-5 gives us a peek at the Worship in Heaven, as John is shown the Throne of God Almighty, as we see worship from the redeemed plus all the creatures of God encircling His Throne.
• Revelation 6-19 lays out God’s Plans for the End of Human History, we are introduced to the future wrath of God upon sinful humanity.
Seven Seal judgments spread from Rev. 6:1-8:1;
Seven Trumpet judgments stretch from Rev. 8:1-11:15;
Seven Bowl judgments fill Rev. 16:1-21.
Then Jesus Christ returns in Rev. 19.
So we could say that as we open to Revelation 9 we are opening up to lessons from God’s plan for the future at the sounding of the 5th trumpet. As we saw last time:

We are teaching through the Book of Revelation, my favorite book of the Bible, all this month at the fantastic campuses of Word of Life in New York and Florida (wordoflife.edu)
Here is the second lesson of 20 that I am teaching RIGHT NOW.
If you are interested in understanding what is happening around us in the sometimes daily global disruptions we see on the news, why not take the course with these hundreds of students?

I hope this time in the Word of God blesses you as much as we have been blessed by the hundreds of primarily teenaged NextGeneration students we have been surrounded by in Florida and New York!
Here's today's class--In Revelation 1:9, John describes for us exactly what the Christian life is like. Flipsis, “tribulation.”
This is the word for being squashed.
He was doing what he was supposed to do, preaching the word of God like he was called to, and because of that, he was in trouble. Flipsis, squashed, can’t hold up the weight any longer.
John’s readers were going through the exact same thing.
They were meeting in secret to avoid being fed to lions. They were suffering for their faith.
They were constantly surrounded with so much immorality that they faced temptation just walking down the street. , and they, with us, and with John, need what God is about to unwrap for them.
When John uses the word “patience” in verse 9, he’s using the word for God telling us to hold on even when it hurts.
Paul described the Christian life as sumagonizumai, “with agony.”
Christians are, according to Paul, “with agonizers.”
We struggle together, we are squashed, and God calls us to hold on even when it hurts.
When God gave the book of Revelation to John, He was speaking to suffering people.
And when God comes to squashed, agonizing people who are barely holding on, we see His gift to us in one glorious moment, when God Himself rips away the wrapping paper and we get to see the real, present-day Jesus Christ.
The reality of our new life in Christ is that it is a struggle. When Paul wrote to Titus, he had already described himself as a fellow-struggler through this world (Romans 15:30; 1Timothy 6:12; 2 Timothy 4:7). Paul calls born-again believers under the guidance of the Spirit of God sunagonidzomai or in English “fellow-strugglers”.

This morning we arrive at the eighth chapter of Revelation. This chapter may hold one of the most impacting truths we have studied so far in this final book of God's Word. This chapter before us contains the twin truths that explain what has happened to the prayers of every believer and saint of every age of human history. The twin truths that God illustrates for us:
The Destination & Application of Our Prayers
Each time we pray in Christ's Name that prayer rises before the Face of God our Father.
God our Father is seated in the Throne Room of the Universe as the Almighty Lord over all. He is all-powerful, He is all-knowing, He is the all-caring, He is the all-loving, and He is the always and everywhere present One to whom we are to unceasingly pray. So to make that lesson Jesus taught about us as His followers to “always pray”, we now come to the illustration of what happens when we pray.
This chapter explains prayer. Where prayers go. What God does with them; and how God answers prayers that don’t get an immediately visible response. For most believers the perplexing issue is when God does not answer what we ask Him to do, especially when it involves us as His children being oppressed, afflicted, unjustly treated, harmed, and horribly abused. When nothing happens from our perspective, what is happening up there where we can’t see right now: the Throne of God.
What goes on at the Throne of Grace & Mercy, as the writer of Hebrews calls the Throne of God?
That mystery is here beautifully explained. Revelation 8 explains the Silence of God and the Cries of His Suffering saints.

Wanted: Men who will Deepen their Walk with God
Psalm 15:1-5
There is a pathway to walking with God called truth.
Truth sets us free, truth guards our way, and truth opens us to commune with God.
Every man who commits to the way of truth, starts down the Psalm 15 pathway into a close walk each day with God. Just as Proverbs 31 describes the woman of excellence, Psalm 15 describes the man of godliness.
Are you ready to deepen your walk with God?
Against this gloomy backdrop of forces within our fallen, sinful flesh to sweep us away from God is the old path. God has the way of obedience and righteousness called holiness. Listen to God ask you and me, each of us men to his presence.
I. HE INTERNALIZES THE TRUTH v. 2
A. "walks with integrity"
B. "works righteousness"
II. HE TALKS THE TRUTH. He is honest. v.2a -3a
A. "speaks truth in his heart"
B. "doesn't slander with his tongue"
III. HE LIVES THE TRUTH v.3b he is a loyal friend
A. "nor does evil to his neighbor"
B. "nor takes up a reproach against a friend"
IV. HE RESPECTS TRUTH. he has proper heroes. v. 4a
A. "in whose eyes a reprobate is despised"
B. "he honors those who fear the Lord"
V. HE PROTECTS THE TRUTH. He can't be bought. v. 4b-5
A. "he swears to his own hurt" = a man of his word
B. "he doesn't put out his money at interest" = not take advantage of adversity in anothers life.
C. "nor take a bribe against the innocent" = he can't be swayed from what is right.
Well, how are you doing men?
Remember that even a tiny hole in the bag will tarnish the silver. Any exposure, no matter how small, is deadly!

Our God of Humility
Between the Gulf of Akaba and the Dead Sea lies a range of precipitous red sandstone heights, known as Mount Seir. Here Esau settled after he had despised his birthright, and his descendants, having driven out the Horites (Gen. 15:. 6), occupied the whole of the mountain (Dent. 2:. 12). The capital city Selah, or Petra, " Rock," was a city unique of its kind amid the works of man.
Perched like an eagle’s nest (ver. 4) amid inaccessible mountain fortresses, the dwellings were mostly caves, hewn out of the soft rock (ver. 3, 6), and placed where you could scarce imagine a human foot could climb.
The story of Esau and Jacob is that of twin brothers, sons of Isaac and Rebekah. They were not identical twins, actually they were opposites (see Gen. 25:24-34).
Esau despised his birthright. The man who had the birthright was in contact with God, he was the priest of his family, he was the man who had a covenant from God, the man who had a relationship with God. In effect Esau said, "I would rather have a bowl of soup than have a relationship with God. "Having seen Esau in the first book of the Old Testament, look now at the last book of the Old Testament and read this strange language: I have loved you, saith the LORD.
Yet ye say, In what way hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother? saith the LORD; yet I loved Jacob, and I hated Esau... [Mal. 1:2,3a]. This is a strange thing for God to say - "I loved Jacob and I hated Esau." The explanation is in the little book of Obadiah. It was pride. "Pride hath deceived you," God says to Edom.
