We discuss parts 3-7 of The Master Key by Masako Togawa. Our journey hops between the various women living at the K Apartment for Ladies, following the Master Key as it goes from person to person, enabling crimes, justice and chaos. Is someone behind the scenes pulling the strings? The construction date looms as the threat of truth approaches. We're also joined by Rebecca Starford, Publishing Director and CEO of Kill Your Darlings Magazine to talk about the magazine, her work as an editor, and her latest book The Imitator.

As we continue the numerically-challenged portion of our playthrough, we get introduced to a nifty new rule in the game. I'm sure this one will play a small role as the story continues on the same path with no deviations.
If you're confused, Ben is the one who knows what's going on, Felix is the one who is lost.

A mysterious gangster looking dude comes in and drops on us the claim that 'Without love, it cannot be seen'. I'm sure this piece of information will be utterly irrelevant and at no point will be the core of the story.

We discuss chapters 1-11 of Benjamin Stevenson's 'Everyone on this Train is a Suspect', the second novel in his 'Everyone' series. Ernest Cunningham is back, and even though you're reading the book he's written, he is really struggling to write it. His previous outing, a true-crime memoir of perhaps the darkest moment in his family's history, has seen him invited to a crime fiction festival travelling the length of Australia on The Ghan. His literary agent has given him a big advance for a sequel, but sadly, autobiographical true crime is hard to follow up. His attempts at following his own mystery fiction guides aren't getting anywhere, so he and his girlfriend Juliette hope that this trip will provide some inspiration. I guess you know where this is going.
We're joined by Dr. Kate Evans of ABC Radio National's 'The Bookshelf' to unravel this book over the next three weeks, and also chat with Benjamin Stevenson about his own journey to write this book.
Thank you to BAD: Sydney Crime Writers' Festival, and Penguin Australia for providing copies of 'Everyone on this Train is a Suspect'.

We discuss chapters 9-12 of "The Floating Admiral" by The Detection Club. Special guest Sean Britten is in as we discuss if the story had a plan, Agatha Christie's solution and unveil the next book. We also speak to Sean about his own books and how he approaches fitting character in to a story that doesn't lend itself to anything more than spectacle.

We discuss chapters 1-6, 'The Death of a Man', in John Dickson Carr's 'The Crooked Hinge' with Brad Friedman of 'Ah Sweet Mystery'. Part of Carr's iconic Dr. Gideon Fell mystery series, we follow the dispute between two John Farnleighs. Allegedly, the two of them met as children on the Titanic, and during the chaos, one stole the identity of other, trading circus life for the wealth of the British upper-class. Is the story true, and if so, which Farnleigh is the real one? Why does the defendant even entertain the idea? The requisite murder occurs, and it's Brad against the boys in this golden-age showdown.

We discuss The Fall of House Voticky and Disappearance of an Actor from Karel Čapek's short story collection, Tales From Two Pockets. An extraordinarily well-read mystery fan, Science Fiction Writer Karel Čapek took a break one summer in Prague to write a mystery story a day, which formed the titular tales of this week's episode. An extensive collection, detailing clever puzzles, insightful deconstructions and whimsical takes, we chose to look at the two most "conventional" mysteries the book had to offer. We also spoke with Dr. Alex Simpson, Senior Lecturer in Criminology, at Macquarie University about our perceptions of criminology and his fascinating work on Ethnographic studies of crime.
