Calgary's Prince's Island Park is a lovely oasis for walks, recreation and arts in the downtown core of Calgary. In summer it features festivals and Shakespeare in the park. The walking trails and bike paths are filled with Calgarians, their kids and dogs, enjoying the beauty of nature, right in the downtown core. As Michelle Stirling, Communications Manager for Friends of Science, reports, the City of Calgary once planned to make permanent facilities on this 'Island of Culture' - but fortunately they thought twice...because this is a flood plain and the island is often subject to serious flooding. And what causes that? Climate change? Or....spring run-off and sometime unexpected weather patterns? The Weather Network explains the unusual meteorological patterns that caused the heavy downpour and the spring conditions that contributed to the exceptional runoff. Les provinces canadiennes ont toutes adopté jusqu’à maintenant à peu près les mêmes approches dans leur politique climatique, mais aucune n’est aussi sévère que le Québec. Cette dernière présente cependant des incohérences flagrantes. Rapport: https://tinyurl.com/ybqk66qy

The City of Calgary, Alberta, is intent on stopping climate change and has established an $87 billion plan to reach NetZero, but does this make any sense at all? According the the Parliamentary Budget Officer, Canada's emissions do not materially affect climate change, and there will barely be any effect on Canada's GDP from climate impacts (the PBO uses the IPCC's own frameworks for calculation). Likewise, when one looks at Calgary's emissions in context, it is laughable that Calgary is going into deficit-financed 'grand plans' to stop climate change, when emissions in China outpace ALL of Calgary's annual emissions in the space of hours. Matthew Nisbet has written a lot about large philanthropies and their efforts to create global cap and trade markets. Carbon taxes, rising food prices, heat-or-eat poverty - dozens of climate policies have been layered on Canadians and many people are feeling like their trapped. "Break Free from Climate Tyranny: Evidence Over Ideology" is Friends of Science Society's 20th Annual Climate Science Event. Join us on Oct. 17, 2023 at the Red and White Club at McMahon Stadium in Calgary for a wonderful buffet dinner and our two speakers. Robert Lyman will talk about climate policy - "When Will Climate Policy Hit the Wall?" He's making a return visit. In 2017 he was our guest speaker and asked the question "Can Canada Survive Climate Policy?" Then he was hopeful, now he's not so sure. Robert Lyman is a former federal public servant of 27 years, a diplomat for 10 years, and a prolific contributor of reports for Friends of Science. Our second speaker is Professor Emeritus Ian Clark to address climate science. Ian Clark will offer "A Reality Check on Climate and Net Zero." Knowledge is power. Inform yourself with evidence from these two excellent speakers. Get your tickets now at http://www.friendsofscience.org and

COP28, the global climate conference is on in Dubai, UAE. Imagine 70,000 people have flown there to be in this beautiful, air conditioned, desert metropolis, to talk about accountability on climate change and greenhouse gas emissions! The parody writes itself. The framework for accountability is a bit vague, but one thing we know that is coming down the pipe is a mandate for companies to count carbon molecules in Scope 1 (their own energy use like at an office or factory), Scope 2 (their suppliers' energy use making/delivering parts/materials), Scope 3 (the emissions of end users - like you). To this end, the accounting world have become the "Warrior Accountants." COP28 - It's all about the party, the grand theatre, the media headlines - and that's about all. Subscribe to our channel to keep up with the next video in the series! Become a member of Friends of Science and help us inform the public about these obscure aspects of climate politics. Friends of Science Society thanks you for your support over the past year. Thank you for sharing our information, commenting and donating. We appreciate an open, civil and rational debate on climate science, policy and economics. Consider giving a gift membership to family or friends this season - or - if you are able - give Friends of Science Society a gift donation.
We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year - and hope for a return to a prosperous Alberta.

Canadians for Clean Prosperity claim that some Canadians could make more money back on carbon taxes than they pay in. Friends of Science disputes this notion in this short video clip and our rebuttal report entitled "Carbon Kleptomania." Fundamentally the thinking of Canadians for Clean Prosperity is flawed - as carbon taxes go up, businesses will shut down or leave, thus reducing the carbon rebate pool to nothing. In fact, to meet Paris Agreement greenhouse gas reductions, Canada would have to shut down all major industries. No industry. No jobs. No carbon 'dividend.' No Canada. Join Friends of Science Society, and your host Michelle Stirling, for our 19th Annual Climate Science Event, with two on-line Free presentations with live Q&A. On May 2, 2022, at 6pm MDT, Australian geologist and Emeritus Professor Ian Plimer will present: "Climate change: The past is the key to the present". Dr. Plimer also recently released a new book called "Green Murder - A Life Sentence of Net Zero with No Parole." On May 9th, 2022 at 7pm MDT, popular Australian science writer, blogger and speaker, Joanne Nova, will give us a lesson on the sad renewables experience in Australia with "How to destroy a perfectly good electricity grid in one million expensive steps." Each event will feature live Q&A following the presentation. The events will be live streamed from our YouTube channel. The event recordings and power points will be posted on our website at https://friendsofscience.org/index.php?id=2825.

Despite being told for years that wind and solar are cheap and 'free', the energy crisis is revealing the truth. "To get wind you need oil"...lots of it, along with lots of natural gas and coal. In addition to these costs, wind and solar also require exotic commodities and rare earth minerals, all of which have been skyrocketing in price by hundreds or thousands of per cent in a few short months. Consequently, instead it being a springtime of tulips, it is, for these industries, 'Tulip-O-Mania.' 'Tulip-O-Mania' refers to a time in Holland when tulips first arrived from Turkey. They were so rare and beautiful that a vast futures market began, with a single tulip bulb escalating to the value of a house or a ship. Toward the end of this 'bubble', people were paying a fortune for tulip 'offset' bulbs from tulips that had not even been planted or propagated yet. Similarly, carbon markets have been based on the Renewable Energy Credits generated by wind and solar and since carbon markets entail 'the lack of delivery of an invisible substance to no one' there's room for a lot of hanky-panky. This is discussed in Interpol's "Guide to Carbon Trading Crime." Some wind producers are now reporting that they are selling products at a loss just to maintain cash flow and some jobs. Clearly no country will be able to rely on wind and solar as a 'net zero' solution in such a market. People should question why governments are still pushing wind and solar when this is the reality. Certainly not 'cheap' or 'free' - not that they ever were! Please read our report: https://blog.friendsofscience.org/2021/10/20/what-you-really-need-to-know-about-renewable-energy-that-the-pembina-institute-wont-tell-you-parts-a-and-b/
