The Special Assault Team, or SAT, is the Japanese paramilitary, counter terrorism unit, under the National Police Agency. Cooperating with the Anti-Firearms, and Counter-NBC Terrorism Squads, the SAT is mandated for counterterrorism missions and incidents involving firearms or criminals, which require an armed response beyond the capabilities of local law enforcement. History The origin of the Special Assault Team can be traced back to September 28th, 1977 when Tōkyō and Ōsaka began to train Special Armed Police units as a response to criminal incidents involving firearms. The existing Special Firearms Squad were basic sniper and entry teams, but were only part time. But in 1977, the Dhaka incident took headlines around the world. Japan Airlines Flight 472 was hijacked by the communist militant & terrorist group, known as the Japanese Red Army. It was realised that Japan was ill equipped to deal with such an act of terrorism. Following the event, the National Police Agency decided to set up secret, full-time anti-terrorism special units at the Tokyo Metropolitan, and Osaka Police Department. The Tokyo unit was nicknamed SAP, or Special Armed Police. This name was made official by 1982. Information on the unit was highly confidential, and its existence was never officially acknowledged until 1996, where it was announced that these tactical units had been organised. After a year of training with GSG 9, GIGN, and the British SAS, the unit name was changed to Special Assault Teams. SAT is involved in; Hostage rescue, Anti hijacking, Supporting civil police in combat, Providing superior assault firepower, Engaging of strongly armed criminal groups, and serving high-risk arrest warrants. Recruitment Members are recruited from Riot Police Units. When the unit was first set up, the members were selected from rangers, rescue specialists, snipers and martial artists. It’s said that they recruit officers under 30 years old... and in order to maintain peak physical strength, their period of service is approximately 5 years. Upon recruitment to the SAT, the officer's name is made classified from the roster of active police officers. This is to protect them from being attacked by criminals, extremist and terrorist groups. After the reactivation of Team Rainbow in 2015, two SAT operators were recruited to bring their skills and expertise, to assist in the fight against terrorism, on a global scale. Alani Kelso was one of the first women to complete U.S. Army Ranger School. During training she demonstrated an aptitude for creative thinking, which made her highly sought after by the CIA; and for a number of years she performed covert ops as a paramilitary agent in the National Clandestine Service. While working for the CIA she acquired quite a mixed reputation, particularly with her superiors, who found her methods questionable… although she always got the job done. Kelso was eventually headhunted by The Division, and worked as an instructor before taking on an active agent status. She is cautious and watchful, she takes it all in and assess the situation before acting. However when faced with an immediate threat, often her ruthless side comes out, most likely an effect of self preservation and often results in extreme acts of violence. Kelso is one of the first people we meet in Washington DC, as she is one of the few remaining Division agents in the area. Through our mission of taking back the capitol, Kelso is more or less there, helping us out every step of the way. Not long after enlisting in the Indian armed forces, Kali was disappointed to learn that women were not allowed to serve in combat units. Prior to 1992, women within the military, served in auxiliary services only... undertaking more of a support role. Shortly after leaving the military, Kali used her family's wealth and prestige to establish her own Private Security Company, that would operate inside India's borders. To widen the reach of her clientele, Kali then founded the Private Military Company NIGHTHAVEN, to operate overseas. This organisation regularly negotiates multi-million dollar contracts, across the globe. In 2019, Six invited NIGHTHAVEN to join Team Rainbow. Officially, this was in response to NIGHTHAVEN answering a distress call on the supertanker Argus. Where pirates attacked the ship and threatened to kill everyone onboard. Because of NIGHTHAVEN, the pirates were successfully neutralised without incident. However, unbeknownst to them, and secretly,... the real reason Six invited Kali and Wamai was to prevent any opposing organisation from hiring NIGHTHAVEN.
