This is Season 2, Episode 14 where I provide a talk about camping at the Forestville-Mystery Cave State Park, provide a house move update, and discuss hitting 10,000 downloads on the Small Scale Life Podcast! I would like to thank all of my guests who have been on our show, and I would like to thank ALL of the listeners out there. We could not and would not do this if it wasn't for you! Thank you so much for your support and interactions with us!
It has been a while since I have done a live stream, but it is time to brush off the dust bunnies and get the YouTube Channel up and rolling.
Thanks for tuning in to the show. Please check out more of Small Scale Life:
Happy Wednesday, all!
It is February 27, 2024, and our unseasonably warm winter continues. The big “but” here is while it was 52 degrees F at high noon, the temperatures are rapidly crashing out. We are expecting single digit temps, 40 mph winds and snow tonight! Great!
The water is a balmy 50 degrees F (again), hence my 13 minute 30 second sit in the cold water. Again, I can see how other content creators like Joe Rogan can go for 10-15 minutes in warmer climates. It still is cold, but it isn’t 36 degree water!
In this video, I catch you up to today on the Cold Plunge Tank Maintenance Plan, Whole30 Challenge on Day 14, and upcoming events.

PURPOSE: I am going to carve out time each week to slow down and connect with Nature in some way.
Walking/standing in snow and cold plunging are two methods I am using to ground myself and connect to nature.
Why am I doing this?❄️To help my body: my muscles and my joints as I age
❄️To remind myself to be grateful - I am extremely grateful for the people and events unfolding in my life. ❄️To connect with Nature❄️To practice discipline in good times and more difficult times❄️To be be mindful - Some live outside in these extreme temperatures. Never forget those less fortunate.

We are a couple of days away from the Fall equinox, and it is time for a garden update! The fall crops of sugar snap peas, green beans, lettuce and spinach are ready to be planted. That means I need to build that wicking bed and get those greens planted.
The tomato plants are still producing new tomatoes, and the pepper plants are bearing fruit! The compost tomatoes are showing buds, and I actually have discovered that the compost cucumbers are compost melons! Whoops! Oh well, we’ll see what happens with those plants.
Finally, if you watched my Harvesting Basil video (https://youtu.be/rA4Ae5sMN2E), you will notice that the basil plants have grown new branches. I am ready to harvest some more basil and make some more pesto.
All in all, the garden is doing great. I just need to get to the Farmer’s Market and buy tomatoes, jalapenos, cilantro, cucumbers, green beans and dill. I have some pickles, salsa and dilly beans to make.
THANK YOU

Welcome to the Small Scale Life Podcast! We are doing a Talking Taboo tonight. This is a recap of Episode 2, and even though I am doing this right before Episode 3 airs, it does help to remind us of the characters and the story this far. Some have said this show is pretty slow, but this particular episode ends with a bang (so to speak)!
Keep in mind that this is a fan show, and any images, music or story are not my own. I am simply commenting on the show and characters as a fan of the show.

I am going to do Grounding outside for 7 days straight. It is Day 3 this morning, and as you can see, it is much, MUCH warmer. Why am I doing this?❄️To remind myself to be grateful - I am extremely grateful for the people and events unfolding in my life. ❄️To connect with Nature❄️To practice discipline in good times and more difficult times❄️To be be mindful - Some live outside in these extreme temperatures. Never forget those less fortunate. Day 3 Gratitude: Julie and I got some more great news for the Eagles Ridge Project and things seem to be rolling in the right direction! At the same time, a new idea and project are being formulated and created. I am starting very, very small and with the tiniest baby steps. That’s how the best things seem to happen, right?
Try grounding. You’ll definitely look at your mornings a little differently! I have been taking some video each morning, and I will be posting them on the Small Scale Life YouTube Channel. ?

In this video, I am going to show you how we made Berry Jelly using berry medley pouches from Aldi (blueberries, blackberries and strawberries), sugar and Certo. That’s it for ingredients….seriously!
The Berry Jelly is a snap to make, and it tastes great on toast, over ice cream or dissolved in plain sparking water (called Sparkling Berry Pop).
I included the general ingredients and recipe in this video, and I will have the full recipe on smallscalelife.com. If you have never made jelly or canned before, this is a great recipe to try! This is really easy, and you get some beautiful jars of great tasting jelly.
By the way, they make excellent gifts to friends and family, especially if you are building community in your neighborhood. Give it a try and give some away. You won’t be disappointed either way!

Getting Grounded with Tom: Storms are A-Brewin!
The Norse God Thor was busy in the Twin Cities the past couple days! We had some serious rain, lightening, thunder and hail on Monday and Tuesday this week!
I was going to head off to bed, but I kept seeing the lightening reflect off the mini blinds. I had to go take a look at the light show.
The noise in the background is our air conditioner. Yes...it is early April and we had it running. Heat and muggy weather makes things a bit uncomfortable in the Third Floor Castle in the Sky. Bear with it; the light show is worth it!
There isn’t much insight today; enjoy the light show!
Learn, do, grow and be a little better everyday!

This is my Daily Grounding Practice.
PURPOSE: I am going to carve out time each day to slow down and connect with Nature in some way. At the same time, I can give some thoughts about what is going on in our Small Scale Life.
Why am I doing this?
?To remind myself to be grateful - I am extremely grateful for the people and events unfolding in my life
?To connect with Nature
?To practice discipline in good times and more difficult times
?To be be mindful - Some live outside in these extreme temperatures. Never forget those less fortunate
I am going to TRY to post daily. If I miss a day or two, I am human.
BE ADVISED: Snow and subzero temperatures can hurt you (ie, frostbite). There are MANY ways to ground and get a dose of Nature. The key: get outside. Be careful. Be safe.

Happy President’s Day, all!
Today I added 25 gallons of hot water to the cold plunge tank to bring up the water level (it was getting low) and to melt some big blocks of ice that started forming on the sides of the tank.
The water was a balmy 50 degrees F, hence my over 8 minute sit in the cold water. I can see how other content creators like Joe Rogan can go for 10-15 minutes in warmer climates. It still is cold, but it isn’t 36 degree water!
In this video, I catch you up to today from Valentine’s Day Cold Plunge. You can see that video here: https://youtu.be/8U4O2z-gt6o?si=nHWJxlRUB-B4lqlm
That cold plunge REALLY helped me for the Couple’s Yoga Session. I was more flexible and didn’t have my usual aches, pains and soreness.
I should have done it on Thursday: the aches and pains and awesome session on Wednesday caught up to me, and Jules’ Karma Yoga Session was….not so good. I made it through, but it was a struggle.
I am going to keep experimenting with the cold plunge. I see and am experiencing the benefits, so I want to keep this going.
Happy President’s Day!
Funny how I can be in 36 degree or 50 degree water and still be more coherent than people in power in Washington DC. Am I right?

Day 34: (Almost) Live from Eagles Ridge!
It was a glorious week in Wisconsin and Minnesota! Temperatures have been in the 40’s and even climbed towards the 50’s (degrees F), which really has melted the remaining snow. Things are looking good at Eagles Ridge!
As I said in the video: the World is Waking Up!
As the snow recedes, it is like the earth is shaking off its deep slumber and beginning to blink. The animals know it: birds like Eagles are beginning their mating rituals, turkeys have emerged on the land, and lots of cardinals and other song birds are chirping and flying together.
It is always a welcome sight for winter weary folk.
Sadly, we know this could be a “false spring,” where March and April can hammer us with more snow. It has happened before, and I try not to be too excited. There could be more winter left this year.
Enjoy this video. Remember: ask the universe what message it has for us and what we need to learn. You might be surprised by the answer.
