Aluminium enthusiast Sir Jony Ive, according to Wired was directly involved of the newly released 24” iMac with Apple Silicon, and I think it explains one fo the things that didn’t quite sit right for me, given what we’d already heard about the new MacBook Pro. One of the biggest surprises for many is the news that those new MacBook Pro models are said to be getting some more ports, namely SD Card Reader, HDMI and Magsafe, and my take on this is that its a reaction to the fact that Jony was no longer leading the design team on a day to day basis. Jony is famous for his reductionist design in recent years. There were a lot of call backs to the history of the iMac in Apple’s April event, going back to the iMac G3 which brought the bright colours, friendly design language and simplicity of use, with just a power cable and your keyboard and mouse to connect and get started, compared to the mess of wires, speakers, displays and more that tower PCs of the time boasted. Actually, I guess that didn’t really get better for PCs since 1998 eh? But as the designs got thinner, the ports got more simple too, right to the point where Apple’s 2015 MacBook landed with a single USB-C port for charging and connectivity - possibly a step too far, but from there out MagSafe disappeared from future products in favour of USC-C charging and connectivity was limited to that standard too in pursuit of simplicity. And simplicity is a noble goal. The ideal situation really is that single port that everything could fit. Just having to have a single cable, that’s reversible both ways, so the same connector on each end that works either way up would be amazing. But of course, USB-C isn’t that simple. The reason I mention USB-C at all is that even though we’ve been told that the updated Pro notebooks that we’ll almost certainly see at WWDC next week will be having those extra, some may say more useful ports back, the brand new iMac has the least connectivity of any desktop Apple has put out, right down to just 2 thunderbolt ports on the entry model. No SD card reader, which until now has ALWAYS been there in the iMac. I think that Apple Silicon is the first time Apple has been able to get the power they needed for iMac into the design they wanted to make in maybe 2016. It explains why the iMac has been stuck in the same exact design since 2012, and virtually the same from the front for even longer. First, iOS 16 is bringing a huge amount of customisation to the Lock Screen, including new Lock Screen widgets - but lets call this what it really is - Apple Watch faces on your iPhone. From the way they’re switched with a long press to switch between different layouts to the portrait images that partially cover the clock, to the complications you can add - that is basically what we have here. Sadly it looks like most of the clock fonts available are pretty ugly - I’d have taken the iOS7 style Helvetica Neue Ultralight all day long but these are all a bit chunky and ugly to me, but at least its an easy fix. Live text from Video is a pretty amazing feature too - so you can now pause a video and copy text right from the screen, as you did with photos last year. And the main feature that made me nearly fall off my chair - grabbing a picture of a dog out of its background and dropping it basically as a clear PNG into a message. Also, something about Sports and Apple news. That seemed like a bit of a waste of time, but I assume Sport is a thing people like. Onto Home - and Apple talked a lot about Matter coming to HomeKit, but never really mentioned Apple TV or HomePod The new version of CarPlay looks insanely cool, and actually also adds a bunch of custom colours way beyond what Apple normally allows WatchOS brought new watch face layouts which match up pretty well with the iPhone ones, Metropolitan looks pretty nice though. Apple Watch Fitness tracking gets way more granular with form tracking for running being added, and even power tracking so you can track progress over time. THEN WE GOT TO MACS - M2. M2 was announced first, with a larger die at the same, if 2nd generation 5nm process - based on A15 as expected, with over 20bn transistors. Memory bandwidth is up 50% to 100gb/s, with a maximum of 24GB of memory supported. 8 cores, 4 performance and 4 efficiency as expected with performance up 18% and when compared to an intel Core i7 1255U it uses a quarter of the power to deliver the same performance. The GPU is up to 10 cores, and gives 35% better performance than M1, and blows away Intel’s integrated graphics chips. There’s also media engines for 8k H.264 and ProRes, with the M2 able to play a pair of 8k ProRes streams together, or presumably 8 4k proves streams (that would be the same amount of data I believe). And of course they put it in the new MacBook….Air. And Pro… and I think they only picked the name last minute, but more on that in a few. The New MacBook Pro 13 with M2 is just that. Exactly what we had before but with M2 in it. Moving on, the Air gets a bigger, Liquid Retina display… but not XDR, Not mini LED. It’s 20% smaller overall but has a slightly larger footprint. New colours of course, Starlight as I suspected, silver, space grey and Midnight, which is the Blue we’d heard about. Cool, makes sense now. Will we get a mid release purple? Who knows. You also get spacial audio too, magsafe charging and honestly it looks pretty great. Video editing is 38% faster apparently than M1, so that seems like a pretty good win for me. The base model gets a binned 8 Core GPU, 8GB unified memory and 256GB storage, so basically as expected. Its $100 to go up to the 10 Core GPU and $200 each to bump the memory or storage each notch. On to MacOS Mammoth - wait, no, MacOS Ace Ventura. We get Camera Continuity, so as I suggested before the LAST WWDC, you can now use your iPhone seemlessly as a webcam for your Mac. There was also StageManager, Its interesting and I think its probably better for the iPad than Mac, but having the option of that consistency when moving between devices is probably good. I’m personally happy with Spaces, but it’s a nice innovation. Passkeys is another huge upgrade, and probably another that won’t be fully rolled out right away, but replaces passwords completely, and Apple has worked with the FIDO alliance, so you can use your iPhone to authenticate yourself on any device even when they don’t have a biometric option. Metal 3 Brings Apple’s own version of DCSS upscaling so performance can be improved, and Apple has also worked with Resident Evil The Village and No Mans Sky to bring these games to Apple Silicon too. Then iPad OS 16 Reference mode comes to XDR iPads, so you can have more consistency across devices. Also, there was something about windows on M1 iPads. This was the big one, display scaling on M1 iPads so you can have more screen real-estate in the same space.
