USSR Collapse: A Crash Course / 2021
#USSR
In 1991, tanks rumbled through the streets of Moscow, and state TV and radio announced the formation of new leadership under the auspices of the State Committee for the State of Emergency. Communist hardliners decided it was time to save the Soviet Union and overthrow Mikhail Gorbachev, the USSR’s first and last president.
Gobachev was revered in the West and widely unpopular at home. When Gorbachev came to power in 1985, he proclaimed the need to make changes within the country, which was afflicted by stagnation. Perestroika (restructuring) and Glasnost (openness), two popular words of the era, were aimed at transforming Soviet society.
The former Soviet leader passed away this week at the age of 91. The documentary shows the fast-unfolding events of 1991 and the legacy of Mikhail Gorbachev.
