I really liked the mood and atmosphere of this track while working on it. Very ominous, and with a sense of urgency creeping in as the pace gradually quickens.
So, I wanted to try and be as faithful as I could to the original. I had thought about possibly adding some guitar parts, but decided against it, since it wouldn't quite fit the overall mood and tone of the song. I mainly made small changes and additions, such as subtle conga drums and some tam-tams. I also switched out the string part at 0:32 and 2:13 and instead used a combination of at least 3 or 4 different synths. One synth in particular to give this almost "howling wind" kind of effect. I really wanted to make it feel just a bit more ominous and eerie than the original!

This track is probably one of the most 'haunting' sounding songs in the soundtrack. I wanted to follow the original as close as I could. Introducing some small additions here and there, of course. One such addition being the creepy, rising and falling kind of noise. Originally I thought about doing pick scrapes to make the sound-effect that I wanted. However, after messing around a bit, pick scraping just didn't sound quite right. So on a whim, I decided to do a kind of sawing motion with my pick on the 3 high strings, because "Well, why not?". Slapped on some delay and light flanger, and it was good to go! That particular noise really reminds me of the sound you hear in a horror movie. Especially when things are building up in the scene. Anyways, I hope you all enjoy the cover! ~DAR

Special thanks go out to darkknight1235 once again for requesting this great track!
I really enjoyed working on this one, I'm actually surprised I managed to get it done so fast! Who knows, maybe I might be able to keep up this kind of pace and have a new cover every 3 or 4 days (I sure hope so)!
I was originally planning to have a bit more of an orchestral sound for this one, but as I worked on it, it just felt so upbeat and energetic that I went with a mix of rock and electronic instead.
I also really really enjoyed playing the little riff that I made up that runs from 1:13-2:00.
It was also nice getting to doodle around a bit and drawing that red-eyes backdrop briefly seen in the beginning and midway through!
Anyways, I hope you all enjoy the cover! ~DAR

This track is one of my absolute favorites from the first DOOM! If you guys couldn't tell, I had a blast making this cover (neck was a bit sore the next day). After recording the main riff and rhythm guitar parts, I couldn't resist playing leads over them. Then after a bit of noodling, I decided I wanted to try and make this song more melodic! Anyways, I hope you all enjoy the cover! ~DAR

Another entry in the Subscriber Appreciation Event! Shoutout this time goes out to Rooster Gold over in The Den of DAR.
Also, I meant to have this out much sooner, but I wasn't feeling too great for the past several days. All's good now though, it was nothin' that good hot soup and sleep couldn't fix!
So I wound up taking quite a few liberties with this one, as the original had absolutely no lead guitar parts. For the guitars in the beginning, I wound up changing the left part to play a fifth higher than the original (since I thought it made things sound cooler).
Also, I wound up sampling the original drum loop in the interest of time, and plus I liked how the original loop sounded (however, I did fiddle around with EQ and compression on it). I did however beef up my kick and other drums. Tried out another new plugin that I haven't had the chance to properly test until now (quite happy with the results!).
I had to try and get back in a "metal" mindset for this one when doing leads. Dealing with these 3 power-chord type songs is tricky. While chug-chug-chugging on the first fret, bending, then chugging on the open string is really easy, the tricky part comes with playing something melodic over that. I wound up keeping things pretty simple with the leads. I threw in the rising and falling leads towards the end to add a bit more energy for that last stretch of the cover.
Other than that, I wound up making up a new part at 2:06. Rather than have the same riff repeat again, I decided to mix it up a little. Also, for the bass during that bit, I played up on the D-string which I think helped it stand out more, compared to the rest of the bass parts done an octave lower on the E-string.
Lastly, I had a bit of fun taking one of my favorite Sytrus synth presets and distorting it. I also couldn't resist the urge to throw in a TB-303-sounding synth as well. Its most prominent during the 2nd half of the first chorus. After that, I think it helps give a nice "bite" to the rhythm/bass section's sound.
Overall, I enjoyed working on this one, as it really made me think of something from back during the TNT marathon (not sure which specific songs, but it certainly has a bit of that vibe).
Anyways, I hope you all enjoy the cover, and I hope you all look forward to the next! ~DAR

Just as I had promised to several folks earlier in the year, here's my take on Fire Lake's "Dirge for the Planet" from the STALKER series!
Many thanks to all the fans whom left kind words and support for my previous STALKER cover, "Live to Forget"! I also want to thank you all for your patience in waiting for this cover. It may take me a while to get to songs, but I always try my best to deliver on them when I'm finally able to record.
Man, this is such a hauntingly somber track. A beautifully melancholic track that wonderfully fits the wasteland that is "The Zone". I remember falling in love with this track as soon as I heard it on Sidorovich's radio in the basement/shop.
I tried my best to stay true to the original, while also trying to combine the acoustic and piano versions of the song. As much as I love the acoustic version from the soundtrack release, its a shame that the piano version that we heard in game never got a proper release. Also to my surprise, I don't think anyone has attempted to combine the two together. With that in mind, I knew exactly how I was going to tackle this cover.
At first, I was very doubtful that I'd be able to do vocals for the cover, and was prepared to just have this be an instrumental-only cover. Curiosity and stubbornness got the better of me and I wound up transposing the song down by 3 semi-tones (tuned to C# Standard). Thus resulting in a warmer tone, further reinforcing the melancholy of the track.
Despite the mournful theme of the song, doing the vocals on this was hilarious fun. I had me going falsetto, Mickey Mouse voice, which actually worked really well in the mix. It really made for this very choir-like sound in the song. Then, an octave below the "I want my MTV" voice, the warm, softly sung, main vocals. The fun goofing around aside, this was also a rather interesting experiment and experience with vocals. Its always fun dipping my toes into styles sounds that I haven't tried before. Or at the very least, styles that I don't often get to explore.
As for the instrumental, the one regret that I have was that I wasn't able to do the 2nd guitar part from the acoustic version. It had a left and right acoustic part, but in order to make space for the piano, I had to cut the harmony guitar part. That in combination with how I had the guitar set up in the mix didn't really allow for extra guitars without sounding weird.
Recording and working with my acoustic (or well, any acoustic element/instrument for that matter), is always really tricky. However, I feel like this time around, I managed to get my mic and chair all set up in the right position. Along with the right amount of compression, EQ, reverb, and other things, I think it turned out very nice!
I actually had some ideas for some noodling around with some lead guitar parts, but I decided to exercise some restraint. Along with what I previously said about having extra guitars, I felt like anything extra thrown in would've altered the overall mood and vibe of the song.
Anyways, I hope you all enjoyed my rendition of this beautiful track! This will eventually make its way on to streaming services, it just depends on how long it takes my distributor to set things up. I'll make another post for when it goes live on other platforms. ~DAR

Always pictured this taking place on a long stretch of highway somewhere out in the desert.
Fitting for the little story here as our protagonist leaves the ocean long behind him (most likely in some classic American muscle-car!).
I kept the song structure the same as the original. I just held the sustain a little longer (like a couple more quarter notes) before the distorted guitars kick in. I also gave the song a proper ending, rather than the fade-out that I did in the original.
From the solo on to the end, I introduced the strings and piano/synth parts. The piano/synth combo is rather subtle and pretty blended, just filling in a bit of space on the left side. The strings are also blended, acting as a subtle support too.
Speaking of subtle, I also changed up the bass line ever so slightly. Back in the old days of not having a bass, and purely thinking only as a guitarist, the poor bass was just relegated to thumping away on root notes. So now, I threw in some octaves to spice things up a little!
Also, getting that clean tone was tricky. I wasn't quite happy with the Ibanez or the Strat by themselves (at least for the rhythm part). So I wound up double-tracking my Ibanez, with the pickup-switch in the middle position. One take was played normally, while the other one was played very, very close to the bridge. That bridge take was mixed and blended in very quietly. Then I brought out the Strat to record on the middle & bridge pickup position. With that, I was quite happy with how the 3 takes blended together. For the clean lead part, my Strat's mid & bridge pickup position was totally sufficient for the job.
Anyways, I hope you all enjoyed the ride, however, its not over yet! Next up, a bit of homesickness, the first of the two retrospective tracks on this album, "Winter Reminisce"! ~DAR

Hoo boy, this one was fun! Also quite possibly the heaviest song I've done that also includes a rock organ!
When I had heard the MIDI rock organ in the original, I couldn't wait to hear what my favorite organ VSTi would sound like. I was worried at first that the typical kind of rock organ sound would sound too "groovy" and not mesh well with the hard rock. Fortunately, it worked out quite nicely. I think it gives a nice contrast, and also adds a nice texture at times.
Before getting off the topic of the rock organ, I was surprised to hear how the good 'ol ValhallaSuperMassive managed to turn the organ into a cool kind of synth pad. Its done during the bit starting around 2:28. Never really had an opportunity to run an organ through the SuperMassive, until now. Definitely going to keep this new combo in mind for future projects!
So, rock organ stuff aside, this song's originally a "Flying Colors" tune called, "Shoulda Coulda Woulda". I wanted to stay true to both the original track, as well as to Jimmy's lovely MIDI rendition of it!
I wound up extending the intro a bit, and also threw in some power-chords and stuff there in order to follow the original Flying Colors version. I did tweak the drums a bit here and there. I also decided to throw in some quiet/ghost-notes for the snares at times. Just felt in the mood to sprinkle a little spice in some sections. Also, I threw in some extra toms here and there, for rockin' dramatic impact \m/!
I had listened to the leads from the original song, and tried to mimic it sort of... though mostly, I just kinda did my own thing, and noodled to my heart's content, while trying to stay true to the spirit of the original.
I always love whenever I'm able to throw in those guitar "wails". Those bits that are most prominent during the 2nd verse (1:23).
Something neat that I got to do on this one was an old trick that I haven't used since the Doom 1 Marathon (at least, I think... its been a VERY long time either way)! Back on the E2M4 cover, I had taken my pick and did a sawing motion and scraped it on the three thinnest strings. For this current cover, at around 2:52, I started at the bridge and went up towards somewhere around the 7th fret, and then worked my way back down, scraping/sawing towards the bridge.
I wound up modifying the bass a little. Its mostly the same, I just dropped the notes down an octave during the heavy parts, to really drive home the heaviness during those parts. Also, I was surprised at how nicely the General MIDI sawtooth sound meshed with the bass at 2:24. Pleasantly gritty!
Lastly, the only other thing I did was throw in some choir parts. Which at this point, I almost feel like something important would be missing if I didn't include them when necessary. Just adds the right texture and vibe to the tracks.
Anyhow, I hope you all enjoy groovin' to the cover! ~DAR
