Red Hat has announced changes to their free-of-charge Red Hat Developers subscription to kind-of appease users of CentOS Linux. For Linux administrators who currently use CentOS in production, plans are still in the works. Will the new plans take Red Hat from a $1 billion company to a $10 billion company? I'll share my thoughts in this BeginLinux Guru video.
The big news from last week is that Adobe are killing Flash. Flash has done a lot of good for making the web what it is today, but it has also become very problematic due to the large number of Flash security bugs. So, the death of Flash is good news for almost everybody, but it's especially good news for desktop Linux users. Flash on Linux has always been problematic, so killing off Flash will make life much easier for Linux users.

In this Linux tutorial, we look at Docker security. But, instead of just looking at docker container security, we'll look at docker host security. The best way to ensure this is to run a combination of podman-docker and SELinux, which are both available on RHEL 8-type operating systems. We'll also see that AppArmor, which is the Mandatory Access Control system on Ubuntu and SuSE, isn't effective at preventing security problems with dockers hosts.

A security researcher has found multiple zero-day security vulnerabilities in Tizen, the Linux based application that's found on multiple Samsung appliances. These Samsung TV security vulnerabilities extend back for about the past two years, and there are some Samsung phone security problems as well. A few weeks ago, Wikileaks documents showed that the CIA can make a Samsung smart TV spy on its owners by installing malware via a USB memory stick. Now, it appears that this same type of malware can be installed via a Tizen Store app vulnerability. Note that this apparently has nothing to do with Linux kernel security, but rather with the app that was built around the Linux kernel.

Linux security is a big deal. But, just like anything else, there's a lot of misinformation about it floating around on the Internet. In this case, a person at Steemit.com posted a hilariously bad article about the recent but with the Debian apt utility. He makes out like the Debian apt bug is something earth-shaking, but it really isn't. Linux users and Linux administrators alike will enjoy watching this.
On a more serious note, even though this isn't quite as serious as this writer makes out, you do want to make sure that you keep your Debian, Ubuntu, and Linux Mint systems updated so that this apt bug will get fixed.

In my "Why systemd?" video, I introduced the basic philosophy behind the systemd init system. I did state that systemd is controversial, but that if you're a desktop Linux user, you do have the option of using a Linux distro that doesn't use systemd. I also pointed out that if you're a Linux systems administrator, or aspire to be a Linux systems administrator, you have no choice, because the big players in the Linux server market have all switched to systemd. So Red Hat, SUSE, and Ubuntu, the big three players, are all systemd Linux distros.
Although there is systemd controversy, we do need to live with it.

In my previous video, we looked at the news about how Red Hat is dropping support for CentOS Linux as we know it. A lot of Linux administrators and Linux developers are upset about that, and believe that IBM had a say in making the decision. But, is that really true? Who did make the decision to discontinue CentOS 8 after the end of 2021, and why?

Today, the BeginLinux Guru adds a bit more commentary about the continuing drama that's coming from Red Hat. If you're a Linux administrator or an aspiring Linux administration who wants to improve your Linux skills, what Red Hat is doing could affect your ability to set up a proper learning lab.
