Would countries reliant on remittances adopt cryptocurrencies? Price premiums providing an incentive for arbitrage in international transfers. To get money from the UK to India, Western Union will charge 5% in fees while Bitcoin will charge -20%. They can stop one person doing it, but they can't stop everyone or they're going to have to search a lot of luggage in the airports. If they start finding papr wallets, people will start memorising seeds and walk across the border with remittances. Mining factories and ant miner smuggling in Venezuela. Being involved with Bitcoin in Venezuela can put you in jail. If you live in the West - you think Bitcoin is hard, that it's too difficult to enter an 8-character password with symbols? Go talk to a Venezuelan about what they go through.
CLARIFICATION: At 2:26, I said that it was illegal to use bitcoin in to escape Venezuela's currency collapse. This is somewhat incorrect. There is still no law in Venezuela that is explicitly in favor or against the use of bitcoin itself; Bitcoin's status in Venezuela would be more accurately described as a grey market. Authorities have justified arrests based on accusations of "committing cyber fraud and power theft," or "money laundering" and "financing terrorism." Bitcoin miners are often subject to extortion by local police. Another charge has been "bypassing currency controls," which is what I meant to address in that statement.
What are empty blocks and are they necessarily bad? What are orphan blocks? Where do bitcoin balances come from? What is meaning of "the longest cumulative difficulty, valid chain"?
These questions are from the MOOC 8.2, 9.2, 9.3, 9.4, and 9.5 sessions, which took place on September 15th 2017, February 23rd, March 2nd, March 9th, and March 16th 2018 respectively. On this episode of Speaking of Bitcoin, join hosts Adam B. Levine, Andreas M. Antonopoulos, Stephanie Murphy and Jonathan Mohan for a discussion about the origins and evolution of Bitcoin maximalism.
Bitcoin maximalists – the self-described pro-Bitcoin, anti-altcoin faithful – have been around for longer than most modern crypto projects. The term was coined by Vitalik Buterin prior to Ethereum's release. Buterin intended the term to be a direct criticism of individuals with an unwavering view that Bitcoin was the only true option for cryptographic token use-cases.
In this episode as we explore the phenomenon's' motivation and roots, we also draw from Speaking of Bitcoin's extensive library. It features the very first recorded explanation of why there should only be one cryptocurrency and why should be bitcoin as explained by Hashcash inventor and bitcoin developer Adam Back . That clip is excerpted from episode 77 Mindtomatter – E77-the-adam-back-interview (December 2013) before Adam became personally involved. It's a fascinating journey and one you won't want to miss.

HODL. It's crypto-land philosophy for not selling your preferred token even when things look their most bleak. But where philosophy intersects with real-world concerns like shelter, food and the niceties of life, tactics have emerged offering both opportunities and risks. From smart contracts to bitcoin collateralized mortgages, the hosts discuss their experiences with loans in the world of crypto.

The biggest threats to Bitcoin. Bitcoin is not just a technology, it is also a community - which is vulnerable to injections of disinformation and drama. Every activist network eventually gets infiltrated and filled with propaganda by either idiots or people who are paid to do this as a job (Reddit, I'm talking about you). My advice is to focus on the technology, which is real. Community fragmentation slows things down. If the brightest programmers are spending their days dealing with trolls, they're not writing code, and that's a danger.

What is the capacity difference between utilizing second layers, like the Lightning Network, and block size increases? Are hard forks harder to execute with the existence of second layers? BCH supporters say that the Lightning Network will not be able to scale, remain decentralised, or be secure. Is that true? How surmountable are each of these challenges? What are the security risks of running a Lightning node, and how many channels should each node open? Why are routing algorithms not part of the BOLT standards?
