Guess where we'll be going next? The Apple II. Because that's what this was written for by none other than Mr. King's Quest himself. I wish that I knew more about what this game was doing because Williams had a knack for discovering capabilities on the Apple II. I mean this is basically a shmup on the Atari 2600, and it's technically sound as well.
Continuing with the arcade games today, we have a Konami shooter that I really love. Well, not really this game. It's sequel, although not even all that much different, just feels better all around. I played these out of order and I found this to be a little more difficult and rigid. Not to the point where it's an impossible pro-level shmup, but some improvements needed to be made and they got done in the sequel.
What surprised me about this is that, going back to it, it felt like the same game for the most part. That's a good thing, because going back in time usually means QOL downgrades and a game that just doesn't have the same charm. Not so here. I was very pleased with it and I'm now a fan of the series.

Also handled by Sunsoft, but it plays very differently and yet...still very Sunsoft. The weapons are very familiar squiggly territory and the music is thumping, but what jumps out the most are the graphics. Specifically, these sprites are much bigger than the first game and it has a very...well, "big" feel as a result of it. It feels like a much grander stage. And Batman going into his final form? Nice.

Kind of weird how this turned into "Intellivision Man" or "Intellivision Runner" or whatever it's called. Was the game really so iconic that it became a logo for a scam console or did I just answer my own question?
It's very limited, difficult to control, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. It's difficult, but the lack of variety gets to you really quick.

Direct comparison time, and it's almost like a different game considering the presentation. It's weird how there's immediate access to customization in the Master System version, but I just didn't see it here...if it's even there at all. I read a bit and it seems like there was praise here, but maybe I'm not the right person to throw this out there: I don't see it. I don't like the controls at all, but I will say that the presentation is pretty good. Sound and that feeling of being behind the wheel feels about right.

A reupload as I've now started figuring out where some old recording errors were happening.
The original Hot Pursuit, although there were cops in NFS games before. Still, this kicked off the high-risk flight from the police fleet and it was addictive. Not in its stride yet, but most of the pieces were there. I'd love to clean this game up with shaders to see what I could get it to look like, but on a CRT this looks great. It's deceiving here on a monitor. No joke, racing games just do not look the same on newer panels.
Coming from Test Drive 4, I had to laugh a bit. I played this first to demo it a couple years ago and I thought it was pretty stiff, but about what I remembered. I knew that it was HP2 where it got really good. Playing TD4 then coming directly to this? So much more forgiveness and it was like I entered the modern era.

Edit: Copyright claim for the first 2-3 minutes. I told ya the game sets the mood.
There's something about the JP SNES aesthetic that matches Godzilla so very, very well. I'd love to see a more elaborate...OK, a better game...show up using that style, but for now we have this. And...it's not easy to figure out. I'm getting stomped at the first boss fight and maybe I'm missing something, but I'm really unclear why human tanks are shooting at me when I'm playing city defender. Maybe I just didn't read.
I'd love to have a real opinion on this, but those boss attacks kept me away so hard, I'm convinced I'm doing something wrong. It can't just be super cheap AI, can it?

A sequel to Drakkhen, it's a lot more hands-on than the first and...really isn't much of the same game. The overworld and walk-up transitions are exactly the same and that gives you that familiarity, but that's about it. I'm not an expert so I can't tell you lore-wise how much the two games connect, but I can say that this is a much more interesting game for me. In fact, I played about an hour longer after this and did a little grinding in the middle. I'm interested in seeing where this goes because it's fun to play. I do wish the whole overworld turning wasn't so weird. I feel like when I turn, I drift.

As with most early Rare games, there are flashes of quality buried in the crap. It's hilariously broken, but in true Beetlejuice fashion, there's humor in the morbid nature of it all. You really should see the programmer's resume...this doesn't reflect his ability.
