The British government has admitted its inability to help people overcome the current cost-of-living crisis, saying it has to be prudent with its spending to avoid getting stuck in the inflationary spiral.
In an interview on ITV on Tuesday, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was at pains to confirm that his government could not provide enough support to offset the higher costs immediately.
“I accept that those contributions from the taxpayer - because that's what it is, taxpayers’ money - isn't going to be enough immediately to help cover everybody’s costs,” Johnson admitted.
The British citizens are experiencing the biggest squeeze since the 1950s, with soaring prices and surging inflation targeting the low-income groups across the country.

Nearly a quarter of people in the UK say they are struggling to pay household bills even before the new hike in regulated energy prices takes effect, an official survey from a leading body reveals.
British premier also warned of a “very severe” inflationary risk and said that the government needs to be wary of it.
“There is an inflationary risk and it's very severe, it could get worse and that knocks on to interest rates, and that knocks on to the cost of borrowing for everybody,” he said, adding that they have to be “prudent” in approach.
It comes after a revelation by ONS last week that nearly a quarter of people in the UK are struggling to pay household bills even before the new hike in regulated energy prices takes effect.
The results of the ONS survey showed that it was “difficult” or “very difficult” for around 23 percent of people surveyed in March to pay their monthly bills compared to a year ago.
According to official figures, consumer confidence in the country has also touched an all-time low.

Princess Diana's bombshell Panorama interview is set to feature in a new Channel 4 documentary which will be 'uncomfortable viewing for the royal family', according to a TV insider.
In the explosive interview, which was watched by 21 million people when it aired in 1995 , the late Princess talked candidly about her and her husband’s extra-marital affairs, and questioned Prince Charles’s suitability to be King.
Now the interview will be re-broadcast this autumn, with a TV insider telling The Sun: 'The show will make for particularly uncomfortable viewing for the royals and couldn’t have come at a more difficult time for them.'
The royal family has weathered several controversies over the last year, with Prince Andrew facing scrutiny over his part in the Epstein scandal, and Prince Harry, 35, and Meghan Markle, 38, stepping back from royal duty and moving to Los Angeles.

Former Bristol mayor George Ferguson has said he will campaign to abolish the role of directly elected mayor for the city ahead of the mayoral elections next year.
Mr Ferguson has previously said the role - which is currently held by Labour’s Marvin Rees - had been “politically hijacked” and is not properly working for residents.
Instead he believes the West of England Combined Authority (Weca)- which covers Bristol, Bath & North East Somerset (B&NES) and South Gloucestershire - should “rebrand” as the “Bristol and Bath City Region” with the Metro Mayor taking on greater national and global responsibilities for Bristol.

The Bristol Liberal Democrats are very pleased that their motion on a referendum on Bristol’s Mayoral system was passed today at Full Council with councillors from the Green and Conservative groups joining us in voting for a referendum.
The campaign will now begin in earnest for a referendum on Thursday 5th May.
Cllr Alex Hartley, Lib Dem Councillor for Hotwells & Harbourside, who proposed the motion said “I’m very glad that councillors united today to finally give the people of Bristol the opportunity to make their voice heard on the Mayoral issue. We know that Bristol has been failed by the Mayoral system, from the failure of Bristol Energy, to the SEND crisis, the arena fiasco and the list goes on. We are looking forward to speaking to local residents and convincing them to back our preferred system, the committee system.”
Cllr Jos Clark, Lib Dem Group Leader & Councillor for Brislington West said “This is the first step on the road to scrapping the role of Bristol Mayor. For one person to have such power is absolutely wrong, and I’m glad that our motion succeeded today in hopefully ending the over-centralised and unaccountable Mayoral system. Communities across the city have been ignored by the Mayor, but not any more."
In his speech to Full Council during the debate on the motion, Cllr Andrew Varney, Cllr for Brislington West said “In the Localism Act of 2011, former Liberal Democrat leader of the Council, Baroness Barbara Janke, had the foresight to include a mechanism allowing for referenda on abolishing directly elected mayors after a period of ten years. Next May will be the tenth anniversary of the mayoral experiment here in Bristol. At that point I think it’s reasonable and appropriate to go back to the people of Bristol and ask them if they want to continue with it or if they want to consign it to the dustbin of history where it belongs.”

WWII: OPERATION "MARKET GARDEN" ARNHEM 17th-25th SEPTEMBER 1944. Lieutenant William Albert Peter Grose (Known as W.A.P Grose), 1st British Airborne Division: 11th Parachute Battalion, A Company No.2 Platoon, Part of The 4th Parachute Brigade (Nicknamed "The Red Devils") flew from Saltby in one of the 33 C-47's as part of Operation Market Garden landing outside Arnhem on 18th September. The battalion was gradually worn down withdrawing through the city and casualties mounted. A move to gain some high ground to the north was discovered and the battalion was caught in the open and decimated, with only around 150 men left. One of the casualties being the commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel George Lea. The second in command Major Richard Lonsdale now took command of the battalion and the remnants of the 1st, 3rd Parachute and 2nd South Staffords battalions. Forming them into an ad hoc force which became known as Lonsdale Force. They were withdrawn to Oosterbeek where the division was forming a defensive perimeter, digging in on the south eastern side with their right flank on the river. Lonsdale addressed the men before the Germans arrived;"You know as well as I do there are a lot of bloody Germans coming at us. Well, all we can do is to stay here and hang on in the hope that somebody catches us up. We must fight for our lives and stick together. We've fought the Germans before — in North Africa, Sicily, Italy. They weren't good enough for us then, and they're bloody well not good enough for us now. They're up against the finest soldiers in the world. An hour from now you will take up defensive positions north of the road outside. Make certain you dig in well and that your weapons and ammo are in good order. We are getting short of ammo, so when you shoot you shoot to kill. Good luck to you all". The Battalion sustained very heavy casualties, 571 men from his Battalion went in & he was one of only 72 who made it out across the Rhine on 26th Sept 1944. The finances of some of the UK's biggest care providers should be investigated by the competition watchdog, according to the former health secretary Jeremy Hunt.
Three of the UK's biggest care home groups are owned by private equity companies and are saddled with significant amounts of debt.
BBC Panorama has been looking at what this means for people living and working in the homes run by two of those groups, and for the future of care in this country.
"It's the Wild West out there," says Mr Hunt. "We need the Competition and Market authority to make sure that market is operating in the interest of consumers, particularly the very vulnerable people who need that sector."

In his basement home office on the outskirts of Sydney, a short walk from the beach and the South Pacific, Jason Ward spends much of his time poring over spreadsheets and going through company accounts trying to make sense of how businesses work.
When someone says "follow the money", that is probably what Jason will be doing.
He works for an organisation called CICTAR - the Centre for International Corporate Tax Accountability and Research - which is funded by trade unions and charities.
Jason has been investigating where money goes in the care industry in countries around the world - and in particular the role of private equity investment.
Typically, private equity investors are wealthy individuals or institutions who buy businesses looking for a better return on their money than from other types of investment.
They will often do this by making them more efficient, then selling it on at a profit.
In the UK, two of the biggest care groups, HC-One and Care UK, are owned in this way. And one of the other biggest groups, Four Seasons, was owned by private equity firms until recently.
Between them they have nearly 39,000 beds, and there have been concerns about the amount of debt they all carry.
Early this year, Jason Ward contacted Panorama about some research he was carrying out into the UK's biggest care home operator - HC-One.
HC-One was set up in 2011 from the ashes of care group Southern Cross - which was the UK's biggest care home company until it collapsed when it couldn't pay its rents.
Now, HC-One owns more than 320 homes and cares for more than 15,000 residents.
It earns on average £770 per bed, per week, from councils, the NHS and private funders, to look after vulnerable people.
Jason wanted to get to the bottom of where all this money was going.

IN MAY of 2014, a right-wing gang burned 48 people to death at a trade union building in the southern Ukrainian city of Odessa at the height of the Ukraine crisis.
President Viktor Yanukovych, seen as being close to Russia, had been forced from office by the so-called Euromaidan protest movement and replaced with an unelected pro-EU official.
In Dublin, six months later, Ukrainian organisation Mobius hosted a photo exhibition dealing with the attack in Odessa and the ongoing war in Donbass. Speaking at the opening of the exhibition, Irish Congress of Trade Unions President John Douglas said:
“Workers everywhere should know the real truth and should support their comrades in Ukraine. Our Foreign Affairs Minister needs get involved and call for an immediate international inquiry into what happened on 2 May when innocent trade unionists, progressive thinkers and politicians were herded into a building and burned to death, and bludgeoned as they tried to escape.”
One of those at the Dublin event is Julie. A student, she is also one of only a handful of people who survived the attack on the trade union building. Out of concern for her parents’ safety she has asked that we do not disclose her full name.
Julie was in Odessa visiting her parents after her studies when rumours circulated of a fight in the city centre between rival demonstrators. Locals said there were many people wounded but Ukrainian TV, now under the control of the unelected regime, had no reports.
“Me and my sister decided to go into the city to find out what was going on,” she tells An Phoblacht.
“My sister is a doctor so we brought some medical supplies and went in to see if anybody needed help. We just didn’t realise how bad the violence was.”
In Odessa city centre, clashes had broken out between rival pro- and anti-government protesters.
“When we got to the city centre there was gangs of really aggressive young guys chanting things like ‘Death to Russians!’ and really extreme nationalist slogans. We got a call from a girl in Kulikovo Square telling us there were people injured there so we headed towards it.”

Kulikovo Square had been the site of a large protest camp by those opposed to the overthrow of the President by pro-EU activists. Many of those there also expressed their solidarity with the pro-Russia rebels in the east of the country who had declared independence from Kiev.
When they arrived, Julie’s sister began applying bandages to an injured man in the square while Julie went into the trade union building.
“I asked where the medical volunteers were and was told they were inside Trade Unions House. The door had been broken down as the building was usually closed. I went to the second floor and I saw two volunteer nurses wearing red crosses and gave them the medical supplies. As I was walking down the stairs back out to my sister I just heard lots of people screaming ‘Everybody inside!’”

A senior Iranian diplomat says the remaining differences between Tehran and other parties to the 2015 Iran deal over the provision of guarantees and full removal of sanctions must be resolved in order to revive the deal.
Head of Iran’s Strategic Council on Foreign Relations Kamal Kharazi made the remarks in a meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati on the sidelines of the 20th edition of the Doha Forum international conference in the Qatari capital on Monday.
“Issues like practical guarantees, lifting of sanctions, and removal of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) from the US list of so-called foreign terrorist organizations are the critical points that must be resolved before any agreement on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),” Kharazi asserted.
The Vienna talks began almost a year ago with the aim of bringing the US into full compliance with the JCPOA, commonly known as the Iran deal. The US left the JCPOA in 2018 under former president Donald Trump and re-imposed the sanctions that the deal had lifted.
The Iranian foreign minister says a final agreement with the P4+1 group of countries in Vienna is close but there are few important issues that need to be resolved.
The administration of Joe Biden has rebuked Trump’s withdrawal from the deal and insisted on re-entering the deal, all while dragging the talks via its failure to provide Iran with guarantees that Washington will not exit the JCPOA again.
Throughout the talks, Iran has pressed the US for the guarantees as well as the establishment of a verification mechanism on the removal of sanctions.
Kharazi pointed to the latest developments in Lebanon and the Middle East region, saying, “The key to Lebanon’s problems lies in the cessation of foreign interference and holding national dialogs.”
Mikati, for his part, expressed hope for the removal of all sanctions against Iran, stating that the country would play a strong role in the regional economy once the bans are lifted.
He briefed Kharazi on the problems facing Lebanon and highlighted the need for national cohesion and unity in the face of the woes.
Kharazi also met Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani to discuss regional developments and bilateral ties. During the meeting, he stressed the need to boost Tehran-Doha ties.
In remarks on Sunday, Kharazi said the IRGC must be definitely removed from the US list of foreign terrorist organizations in order to restore the JCPOA.
The former foreign minister said the IRGC is a national army and thus its designation is unacceptable.
Iran, he said, will not back down from efforts to secure the removal of the IRGC from the list.
“A nuclear deal is imminent, but issues depend on America’s political will. There must be guarantees that the US will not withdraw from the nuclear deal once again in the future,” he added.
Kharazi stressed that the US policy of “maximum pressure” has failed and that the Islamic Republic will need time to verify the removal of the sanctions.

Prince Charles is facing a call for his abdication and a frosty response in Moscow after reportedly comparing Vladimir Putin to Adolf Hitler over Russia's annexation of Crimea.
Charles blundered into the international crisis over Russia's actions in Ukraine during a tour of Canada, when he spoke to a woman who fled the Nazis and lost family members during the Holocaust.
According to the Daily Mail, the prince compared the Russian president to the Nazi leader when talking to Marienne Ferguson, a museum volunteer who moved to Canada with her Jewish family when she was just 13. "Now Putin is doing just about the same as Hitler," Charles is reported to have said.
Charles's remarks have been criticised across the political spectrum in Britain: the Labour MP Mike Gapes called for his abdication, while the outspoken Ukip leader, Nigel Farage, said the prince was wrong to get involved.
Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, pointedly refused to discuss the issue when approached by journalists. But the popular Russian daily Moskovskij Komsomolets (MK) said Charles's remarks risked "triggering an international scandal".
MK said Charles's comments risked complicating already "clouded" UK-Russian relations.
Peskov initially said he knew nothing about the comments, according to Sky News. He later told the BBC's Moscow correspondent, Steve Rosenberg, the Kremlin was "not commenting right now" on the story.
Anti-Russia activists in Ukraine praised Charles's remarks. "Good old Charley," commented one contributor to the Facebook page of Euromaidan, which helped organise the protests in the Ukrainian capital Kiev that led to the ousting of the pro-Russia president Viktor Yanukovych.
Labour MP Gapes, a current member and former chairman of the House of Commons foreign affairs committee, said the prince should have kept his views private. The Ilford South MP tweeted: "If Prince Charles wants to make controversial statements on national or international issues, he should abdicate and stand for election.
Ukip's Farage is reported to have said: "There are times when it might be better for Prince Charles not to get involved in things like this."
Britain's former ambassador to Russia, Sir Tony Brenton, said it was a "grotesque exaggeration" to compare Russia's actions in Crimea with those of the Nazis. But he said Charles' intervention could help Russia reconsider its policy in Ukraine.
Speaking to BBC News, Brenton said: "It will be picked up in public circles in Russia .. The Russians have taken over Crimea, they are debating with themselves about where to go next. The fact that they have generated the impression in some minds that they are behaving a bit as Hitler behaved, while I think is a false judgement, will help [them] to reconsider a little bit."
Brenton added: "Hitler is the ultimate ogre in Russian public opinion ... The fact that Russian policy is generating these sort of reactions ought to have a calming effect there."
Brenton who served as ambassador to Moscow between 2004 and 2008 added: "Russia is having quite a nationalist moment, but the judgment that Putin is behaving like Hitler, is very mistaken. The annexation of Crimea was entirely illegal and wrong but to say that that leads us in the direction of a revanchist Russia - the bear being on the prowl again - is a grotesque exaggeration."
Deputy prime minister, Nick Clegg, said Charles was "free to express himself".
Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Clegg said: "I have never been of this view that if you are a member of the royal family somehow you have to enter into some Trappist vow of silence. I think he is entitled to his views. But I don't know whether those were his views because I just don't think providing a running commentary on what were private conversations is useful to anybody.
"I don't know exactly what he did or didn't say in that conversation because he thought it was a private conversation," Clegg added.
Asked if he agreed there were parallels to be drawn, he said: "I'm not going to start comparing one period of European history to another.
"People can make different comparisons from different periods of history if they wish. All I would say is that right now I think the behaviour of Putin is not only menacing to Ukraine but it is very destabilising for Europe more generally.
"That is why we continue to say to the Russians, continue to say to Vladimir Putin: step back, de-escalate. It's not in Russia's interests, let alone anybody else's, to continue ratcheting up this tension."...
