In this video we begin chapter 7 where we will cover the counterparts to the Sn1 and the Sn2 reaction mechanisms which are the alkene forming E1 and E2 reaction mechanisms. We cover the E-Z system for naming alkenes, the stability of alkenes, cycloalkenes, dehydrohalogenation reactions, and the E2 mechanism.

In this video I prepare silver chlorate from silver nitrate using a process I found in Inorganic Syntheses, Volume 2. It is a very simple metathesis reaction that just about anyone could do. Silver chlorate is pretty sensitive to light but it's not as bad as silver chloride.

In this video I first carry out a preparation of amorphous cadmium metal from cadmium sulfate using a magnesium rod. The amorphous cadmium is taken and refluxed with iodine in water until all of the cadmium dissolves. The solution is then evaporated down over boiling water to both expel excess I2 and to crystallize the product. The cadmium(II) diiodide is then allowed to evaporate to dryness in a vacuum desiccator.
