Learning Blender in 31 Days
I decided to learn 3D with blender and also electronic music production by doing a little bit every day in July. Even though I just scratched the surface I feel a lot more at ease with the tools now.

When it comes to learning a new skill in an intensive way I have a few observations:

1) throw out artistic perfectionism, just learn the tools. select projects that give you an excuse to learn new things about the tools. better to make something crappy all the way through 3 times than do it once well and then forget it

2) all your mistakes are valuable and you want to make a lot. mine for mistakes and catalog them in your mind. you want to try and make as many as possible so you are familiar with the different kinds of errors and bugs that can come up. don't make the mistake of following tutorials so perfectly that you get totally lost if you ever get off their guided path.

3) do the same thing as many different ways as you can. in most disciplines theres a lot of different ways to do something so do some excercises where you try and make the same small thing as many ways as you can find.

4) think of projects first, then learn what you need for them. theres a firehose of information about everything and you need an initital motivation to filter through it for things that are useful for a specific purpose or idea.

5) as you get more comfortable with your specific toolset, start looking for the 'big picture' insights from the field and what the most experienced people have to say about their work. rather than studying how to do something in a specific version of this software, try and understand the broader concept-- this way you can learn from anyone even if they aren't using the exact same tools as you, and start to get a peek at what mastery and artistry looks like.

6) sometime in the middle of starting to learn something you'll be awed by what experts can do and get a bit paralyzed by their mastery but try not to get down on yourself because of it-- recognize that even those experts still feel that way compared to their role models and it never goes away. all you can do is focus on your feet and finding some progress and you can make it to the horizon eventually. in terms of art the journey is important and you can still make some of your best work from a naive or novice position.

7) you can't get better at something by thinking or feeling about it, you just have to do it every day. you can make good stuff and progress even when you are not feeling good about it.

8) find communities for the stuff you are trying to learn, especially smaller communities where you can get your hands dirty making and exchanging knowledge directly with others. I can't emphasize enough how much quicker I was able to understand some things by talking them through with people instead of trying to read or listen to a recording. plus you get to learn from all the happy accidents and idiosyncratic tricks that others come up with

9) let your fears guide your learning. If you notice you are staying away from a certain topic because it seems too annoying/complicated/intimidating, try to do a simple project where you tackle it head on and get used to it.
