The ethereum improvement proposal, EIP-1559 is a highly-anticipated Ethereum upgrade and radically changes how users bid for transactions.
EIP-1559 has lots of community support and is also technically ready to be included in the hard fork after Berlin, pending core developer evaluation of the process. Miners have however started to rally against the proposal and this is a key talking point of this video. Eths price has been in reverse and things look shaky moving forward with no clear agreement. How big of an issue is this? The reason miners are not happy is that the new mechanism would burn some of the transaction fees miners would have previously received.
Could we be heading for a contentious hardfork? Hardforks were a feature of the last bull run in 2017 and I suspect some projects may be experiencing the initial murmurs of discontent that can lead to a contentious hardfork.
The two most effective ways for miners to protest the proposal: (1) fork Ethereum to create an altcoin without EIP-1559; and (2) block EIP-1559 on Ethereum by driving the basefee to zero.
After considering their feasibility & opportunity cost, I think miners will find that any form of aggressive protesting would damage long-term miner revenue more than cooperating with users. The coming weeks will be interesting. So how are we approaching ethereum, are we buying selling short longing. Check out the video and give us your thoughts.
