Post-Marxism versus Cultural Studies is an innovative exploration of the ethical and political significance of Cultural Studies and Post-Marxist discourse theory. It argues that although Cultural Studies and post-Marxism tend to present themselves as distinct entities, they actually share a project - that of taking on the political. Post-Marxism presents itself as having a developed theory of political strategy, while Cultural Studies has claimed to be both practical and political. Bowman examines these intertwined, overlapping, controversial and contested claims and orientations by way of a deconstructive reading that is led by the question of intervention what is the intervention of post-Marxism, of Cultural Studies, of each into the other, and into other institutional and political contexts and scenes?Through considerations of key aspects of Cultural Studies and cultural theory, Post-Marxism versus Cultural Studies argues that the very thing that is fundamental to both of these politicised app **Review In the first sustained scholarly assessment of the scandal of post-Marxism Bowman traces the struggle -- both intellectual and political -- of academic Marxism to keep its footing on the long march through the institution. As the versus that hinges his title suggests, neither post-Marxism nor Cultural Studies remain unscathed by Bowmans staging of this face off. Post-Marxism versus Cultural Studies rewards the serious reader concerned to come to terms with the discursive politics of the contemporary university. John Mowitt, Professor of Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature, University of Minnesota This is an exciting field which is beginning to open up a sustained thinking about politics from a post-structuralist perspective This is an ambitious book which will make a significant impact in its field. In recent years, terrorism has become closely associated with martyrdom in the minds of many terrorists and in the view of nations around the world. In Islam, martyrdom is mostly conceived as bearing witness to faith and God. Martyrdom is also central to the Christian tradition, not only in the form of Christs Passion or saints faced with persecution and death, but in the duty to lead a good and charitable life. In both religions, the association of religious martyrdom with political terror has a long and difficult history. The essays of this volume illuminate this history--following, for example, Christian martyrdom from its origins in the Roman world, to the experience of the deaths of terrorist leaders of the French Revolution, to parallels in the contemporary world--and explore historical parallels among Islamic, Christian, and secular traditions. Featuring essays from eminent scholars in a wide range of disciplines, Martyrdom and Terrorism provides a timely comparative history of the practices and discourses of terrorism and martyrdom from antiquity to the twenty-first century. **

With the resurgence of neural networks in the 2010s, deep learning has become essential for machine learning practitioners and even many software engineers. This book provides a comprehensive introduction for data scientists and software engineers with machine learning experience. Youll start with deep learning basics and move quickly to the details of important advanced architectures, implementing everything from scratch along the way.Author Seth Weidman shows you how neural networks work using a first principles approach. Youll learn how to apply multilayer neural networks, convolutional neural networks, and recurrent neural networks from the ground up. With a thorough understanding of how neural networks work mathematically, computationally, and conceptually, youll be set up for success on all future deep learning projects.

This volume examines Otto Friedrich Bollnows philosophical approach to education, which brought Heideggers existentialism together with other theories of what it is to be human. This introduction to Bollnows work begins with a summary of the theoretical influences that Bollnow synthesized, and goes on to outline his highly original account of experiential educational reality--namely, as a reality alternately harmonious or broken, but fundamentally guided. This book will be of value to scholars and students of education and philosophy, especially those interested in bringing larger existential questions into connection with everyday educational engagement.

Despite -- and perhaps because of -- increasing global mobility, there are more types of borders today than ever before in history. Borders of all kinds define every aspect of social life in the twenty-first century. From the biometric data that divides the smallest aspects of our bodies to the aerial drones that patrol the immense expanse of our domestic and international airspace, we are defined by borders. They can no longer simply be understood as the geographical divisions between nation-states. Today, their form and function has become too complex, too hybrid. What we need now is a theory of the border that can make sense of this hybridity across multiple domains of social life. Rather than viewing borders as the result or outcome of pre-established social entities like states, Thomas Nail reinterprets social history from the perspective of the continual and constitutive movement of the borders that organize and divide society in the first place. Societies and states are the products of bordering, Nail argues, not the other way around. Applying his original movement-oriented theoretical framework kinopolitics to several major historical border regimes (fences, walls, cells, and checkpoints), Theory of the Border pioneers a new methodology of critical limology, that provides fresh tools for the analysis of contemporary border politics.

When the body is foregrounded in artwork as in much contemporary performance, sculptural installation and video work so is gendered and sexualised difference. Feminist Perspectives on Art Contemporary Outtakes looks to interactions between art history, theory, curation, and studio-based practices to theorise the phenomenological import of this embodied gender difference in contemporary art.The essays in this collection are rooted in a wide variety of disciplines, including art-making, curating, and art history and criticism, with many of the authors combining roles of curator, artist and writer. This interdisciplinary approach enables the book to bridge the theorypractice divide and highlight new perspectives emerging from creative arts research. Fresh insights are offered on feminist aesthetics, womens embodied experience, curatorial and art historical method, art world equity, and intersectional concerns. It engages with epistemological assertions of how the body feels, how the land has creative agency in Indigenous art, and how the use of emotional or affective registers may form ones curatorial method. This anthology represents a significant contribution to a broader resurgence of feminist thought, methodology, and action in contemporary art, particularly in creative practice research. It will be of particular value to students and researchers in art history, visual culture, cultural studies, and gender studies, in addition to museum and gallery professionals specialising in contemporary art. *

Bergson argues for free will by showing that the arguments against it come from a confusion of different conceptions of time. As opposed to physicists idea of measurable time, life is perceived in human experience as a continuous and immeasurable flow rather than as a succession of marked-off states of consciousness.
