Naugatuck Police Officers Shoot Man Who Approached Them With a Knife

Naugatuck, Connecticut — On April 25, 2024, at approximately 9:12 a.m., Naugatuck Police Department received a 911 call that there was a male with a knife at Baummer’s Pond Park acting erratically. Naugatuck officers responded to the park located on Mill Street. Upon arrival, they observed 24-year-old Kyle O’Creene, near a picnic table holding a knife. O’Creene stood up and advanced upon the officers with the knife, ignoring multiple commands to drop the knife.
Officers initially atempted to subdue O’Creene using a taser, but the taser deployment was unsuccessful. When O’Creene continued to advance on the Naugatuck officers still holding the knife, Officer Crystal Hudson and Officer Joseph Palhete discharged their handguns, striking and wounding O’Creene. Officers on scene immediately commenced providing medical aid to O’Creene who was ultimately taken to Waterbury Hospital for treatment. He remains at the hospital in stable condition.

Dallas, Texas — On Sunday, March 19, 2023, at about 6:50 p.m., Senior Corporal Matthew McLain was notified by property management at 1910 Bennett Avenue that a man they believed was involved in a stolen vehicle case earlier in the month where the suspect rammed a marked squad car was at the location. The preliminary investigation determined Senior Corporal McLain arrived at the apartments and requested back up. When officers arrived, Senior Corporal McLain and Officer Kimberley Esquivel entered the front of the building and walked through to the back parking lot where they located the suspect, 35-year-old Hernan Gutierrez. Senior Corporal McLain started engaging with Gutierrez, giving commands, and the suspect pulled away and started to struggle with officers.
During the fight, Officer McLain drew and deployed his taser, which was ineffective in controlling the suspect. As the struggle continued, Gutierrez produced a handgun and fired one round. Officer Esquivel drew her department-issued firearm and shot one time, hitting Gutierrez. The suspect fell on top of his weapon, and officers placed him in handcuffs. Officers immediately requested Dallas Fire Rescue to the scene and rendered medical aid while monitoring Gutierrez’s condition. DFR responded and took Gutierrez to a local hospital in critical condition. The suspect’s weapon was recovered at the scene. The round fired by Gutierrez was located by detectives and hit an occupied apartment north of the incident location. No officers or anyone at the scene was injured. Gutierrez will be charged with Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant. The suspect is also currently wanted on a federal probation violation for a firearm-related offense. The investigation is ongoing and is being investigated by the Dallas Police Special Investigations Unit.

Columbus, Ohio — The Columbus Division of Police released body camera footage, two days after 27-year-old Miles Jackson was fatally shot in an exchange of gunfire with Columbus police and Mount Carmel St. Ann’s hospital security on April 12, 2021. At 12:11pm , Westerville Police notified Columbus Police that WPD had “one of your wanted subjects at St. Ann’s hospital.” The operator identified the subject as Miles M. Jackson, date of birth 12/5/93. She informed Columbus Police that Jackson was found sleeping on a bench outside of a bank, and was taken to the hospital after a suspected relapse related to a drug overdose. She informed Columbus Police that Jackson has an open domestic violence warrant out of case, with additional warrants for assault, falsification, resisting arrest, drug possession, and weapons under disability.
At 12:41 Columbus Police Officers Ryan Krichbaum and Andrew Howe are dispatched to St. Ann’s to take Jackson into custody. The second video from Officer Krichbaum’s body worn camera starts at 1:42pm., Officers Krichbaum and Howe are seen preparing Jackson fortransport to the Franklin County jail. The officers are seen searching Jackson’s pockets. Officer Krichbaum appears to discover something and signals to Officer Howe. He says, “Get his arms behind his back right now,” and a struggle between the officers and Jackson begins. During the struggle, Jackson can be heard saying "I'm giving it to you man." Police said the video shows Krichbaum tasing Jackson, taking him to the ground, where he continued to resist.
A short time later, police said the video shows Jackson's gun fire. Police said the bullet visibly left Jackson's pocket and Krichbaum is seen struggling to disarm him. Howe is seen in the video firing his gun, but it malfunctioned. After the initial shots were fired, Jackson is down on the ground with officers pointing guns at him. Jackson is ordered to put his hands in the air several dozen times over the course of the next five minutes. Jackson told officers that he was leaning on the gun at one point. A Taser is eventually used on Jackson again. After the Taser was fired, a gun was fired, followed by a series of gunshots. Officers are then heard calling for medics to assist Jackson. An initial investigation by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation confirmed that Jackson was armed with a gun and fired shots.

Napa, California — The Napa County Sheriff's Department released a video Tuesday showing the moment a deputy shot and killed a robbery suspect after a chase that occurred on April 24th, 2020 in Napa. The robbery suspect, Brandan Reid Nylander, entered Walmart and used a hammer to shatter a glass display case containing ammunition. The suspect grabbed a box of shotgun shells and threw the hammer, hitting a Walmart employee. Napa Dispatch issued a description of the suspect and his car. About 20 minutes later Deputy Gregg Lee spotted Nylander driving on SR-29.
Deputy Lee attempted to stop the suspect, but Nylander led deputies on a pursuit that lasted almost 3 minutes. At the end of the pursuit the suspect got out of his car and pointed a loaded shotgun at two deputies. Nylander’s actions prompted Deputy Gregg Lee to fire two shots, however both shots missed the suspect. Nylander continued to hold the loaded gun and began walking to the front of his car with his hands raised, but still holding the loaded shotgun. Deputy Lee fired two more shots. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Sheriff's Office has gathered evidence that suggests the suspect was suicidal.

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma — On August 22, 2022, at approximately 1:18 p.m., Oklahoma City Police responded to the address of 2221 SW 78th St. on reports of multiple gunshots in the area. It was learned quickly that deputies with the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office had exchanged gunfire with a person at this residence while serving an eviction notice. Two of the deputies were struck by the gunfire.
As responding officers arrived on scene, they learned the suspect, 35-year-old Benjamin Plank had fled the residence in a vehicle trailering a boat. It was also learned the suspect had loaded several firearms into his vehicle prior to leaving. Benjamin Plank was spotted a short distance from the scene, shortly after the shooting occurred. Oklahoma City Police attempted to stop him on traffic when he refused, initiating a pursuit.
During the pursuit, while travelling northbound on S. I-35, the driver discharged rounds from a rifle at Oklahoma City Officers. Two involved officers were able to return fire toward the suspect. No injuries occurred from the gunfire. The suspect continued eastbound on Interstate-40 from Interstate-35 ultimately exiting at Air Depot Blvd. The suspect stopped at the Tinker Air Force Base gate and surrendered. Benjamin Plank was taken to an area hospital to be checked for injuries and booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center on a multitude of charges including first-degree murder.
Both officers have been placed on routine paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation. Benjamin Plank is accused of fatally shooting Sgt. Bobby Swartz and wounding Deputy Mark Johns. Johns has since been released from the hospital. Court documents show that Plank also shot at but missed a third deputy.

Edison, New Jersey — The Attorney General’s Office released video footage from three body-worn cameras related to a fatal police-involved shooting that occurred on April 12, 2022, in Edison, N.J. The decedent has been identified as Merrill Rambarose, 49, of Edison. The officers who fired their service weapons at Rambarose have been identified as Officer Daniel Bradley and Officer Joseph Elqumos of the Edison Police Department.
According to the preliminary investigation, uniformed officers of the Edison Police Department responded to a 911 call made shortly after 3:45 p.m. reporting a male threatening an individual with an axe on Judson Street in Edison, N.J. When officers arrived, they attempted to speak to Rambarose on his balcony. Rambarose then went inside his apartment and emerged moments later armed with a short-handled axe. Officers ordered him to back up and drop the weapon.
He did not comply with the officers’ commands and instead charged towards the officers with the axe in his hand. At this time, Officers Elquomos and Bradley both fired their weapons, fatally wounding Rambarose. An axe was recovered near Rambarose. Officers and emergency medical personnel rendered first aid to Rambarose, who was pronounced deceased on scene via telemetry at 4:41 p.m.

Paramount, California — On March 19, 2024, at 9:18 p.m., Lakewood Station deputies responded to a residence in the 15900 block of Indiana Avenue, Paramount, regarding a welfare call. They contacted the victim, who stated her ex-boyfriend had violated a protective order by showing up at her residence and demanding she let him inside. The male was later identified as 40-year-old Jose Acosta from the city of Bellflower. Deputies observed Acosta driving near the victim’s residence in an orange Pontiac vehicle. Deputies followed Acosta until he stopped in the number two lane of eastbound Artesia Boulevard at Downey Avenue in the city of Long Beach. As deputies prepared to conduct a traffic stop, they positioned their vehicles behind Acosta, who suddenly put his vehicle in reverse.
Acosta accelerated backwards and crashed into the front end of the deputy’s patrol vehicle. The impact of the collision was so violent that it caused both vehicles to become inoperable. Deputies immediately exited their patrol vehicles and observed Acosta exit the driver’s door of his vehicle with a knife in his right hand. Deputies ordered Acosta to drop his weapon, but he refused and charged toward them, at which time a deputy-involved shooting occurred. Acosta sustained gunshot wounds to the torso. Deputies rendered aid until the arrival of Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics. Acosta was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene. A knife with an approximate three-inch blade was recovered at the scene. One deputy was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for non-life- threatening injuries sustained during the collision. There were no other persons injured in the incident.

32-year-old Carlos Martinez is now in custody, facing three charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer, after police say he hit three LPD officers with his vehicle. The incident started at the Del Estrado Apartments in the 3200 block of 62nd Street around 1:15 p.m. Thursday. Officials say Martinez was evicted from his apartment Wednesday and was picking up his belongings when he got into an argument with another resident and officers were called to the scene. Police say Martinez would not comply with the officers' demands to get out of his vehicle. Officers tazed Martinez, and as they were standing near the SUV, he began driving in reverse. One officer was able to grab a child in the front passenger seat and pull him to safety, but as the vehicle reversed, three officers were injured. Officers then fired multiple shots at the SUV. Martinez continued backing up, crashed into a police Tahoe and then drove away from the scene.
LPD tells us Martinez put the SUV in drive and started driving toward Officer Donovan Powell, who was lying on the ground, Officer Powell was struck by the vehicle. but they say he was able to jump out of the way before being run over. First responders classified his injuries as serious because they feared broken bones or internal injuries, but he was released from the hospital as on Thursday evening. Officer Mark Ellison suffered moderate injuries. Officer Saul Garay suffered minor injuries. The other two officers were also released from the hospital on Thursday evening. Honey, Miller and Waters Elementary were placed on lockdown during the incident. The suspect's vehicle was found abandoned in an alleyway near 73rd and Joliet Ave. The manhunt continued Thursday and carried over into Friday.
On Friday morning, before 9 a.m., police began searching in the 3400 block of 73rd Street. Patrol officers, K9 units, mounted patrol, SWAT and detectives converged in the area of 73rd and Indiana. Police say Martinez went into several businesses in that area on Thursday night and Friday morning, wanting to use a phone to make calls. Martinez was captured near 74th and Joliet on Friday evening. Police say a citizen called around 4:30 p.m. to say she saw Martinez in an alley between 73rd and 74th Street near Joliet. Officers nearby responded and arrested Martinez without incident. He appeared dehydrated and was taken to the hospital for medical clearance. Once cleared, he will be taken to the Lubbock County Detention Center.

Phoenix, Arizona — On Saturday, September 24, 2022, Patrol officers had just completed an unrelated call when they were driving along 19th Avenue just south of Glendale Avenue. While these officers were passing by Tuckey Lane, they saw a man throwing rocks at their vehicles. Both units involved stopped further down the street and spoke with each other about what occurred. Officers then also noticed a rock had broken the spotlight on one of their patrol cars. At this point, officers used their radios to tell a communications operator what was happening while also requesting assistance from the helicopter and an officer with less lethal munitions. As the officer who was riding solo pulled into the intersection of 19th Avenue and Tuckey Lane, two rocks hit his patrol car.
As the officer got out of the patrol car, he began giving commands to the man to drop the rocks. The man did not comply. The man then threw an additional rock which hit the officer in the shin. Seconds later, the man then appeared to prepare to throw another rock at which point the officer involved shooting occurred. After the shooting officers provided medical aid to the individual and requested the Fire Department for additional help. The subject was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries. Both patrol vehicles sustained damage from the rocks being thrown. Detectives collected several rocks from the intersection ranging in weight from 2.9 ounces to 19.8 ounces. The officers involved in this shooting are both assigned to the Desert Horizon Precinct, one of the officers has 2 and a half years on the department. The other officers have two years on.

San Leandro, California — On April 18, 2020, about 3:12PM, San Leandro Police Officers responded to Walmart, located at 15555 Hesperian Boulevard, for a report of a man brandishing a baseball bat inside the store. Upon their arrival, officers saw Steven Taylor standing near the shopping cart storage bay holding a baseball bat. Officers approached Taylor and gave him commands to put down the bat. Taylor did not comply with the officers’ commands and instead walked towards the officers while still holding the bat. An officer discharged his taser, which was not effective, and Taylor continued walking towards the officers. Then, the officer used his service weapon, striking Taylor once in his upper torso. Seconds later, another officer discharged his taser at Taylor. Officers called for paramedics and provided first aid until they arrived. Despite life-saving measures, Taylor died from his injuries at the scene. The officers involved were placed on administrative leave. On April 20, 2020, the Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau performed an autopsy on Taylor and the preliminary cause of death was determined to be a single gunshot wound to his chest. Additionally, the Coroner’s Bureau confirmed that Taylor did not sustain any additional gunshot wounds to his head or back.
