For today's short, we showcase three different cheap record players and their recording quality using their built-in ceramic phono stages with a genuine Japanese Chuo-Denshi CZ-800: - Magnavox MD699 Suitcase Turntable (aka Crosley Cruiser) - Sylvania STT008USB (aka Crosley Revolution) - Crosley CR-40 For this test, the YD cartridge that comes with the Magnavox and Sylvania turntable and the cheap D-brand cartridge that came with the Crosley was replaced with a Japanese Chuo-Denshi CZ-800 for best results. I really don't trust the Chinese-made clones, so I have a stash of Japanese CZ-800s pulled from several record players I've serviced in the past. The Magnavox seems to use a standard line input to connect the cartridge with, relying on a high output cartridge, while both the Sylvania and Crosley both have a proper high impedance phono stage for the ceramic cartridge. Regardless, the differences are clearly audible between the quality of the ceramic phono stage.
