Lewitt MTP 940 CM Handheld Condenser Mic Review / Test (vs. SM58, AT2010, KSM105)
Today I review one of the most versatile handheld mics I’ve ever tested, the Lewitt MTP 940 CM. This is a multi-polar pattern handheld condenser microphone with a 1” capsule. It also offers two pads and two high pass filter options. In the handheld condenser market, the self noise is pretty respectable, did a great job at off axis coloration, and did great rejecting background noise.

Today I review a budget / affordable XLR condenser microphone, the Tascam TM-80. The microphone comes in between $60-$70, and it has a mid forward sound with a smoother top end. It does a pretty good job with background noise rejection and I’ve heard microphones do a much worse job at plosive and shock rejection. For $60-$70, I think it’s a pretty good deal

Today I review the Audio-Technica AT4040, a large diaphragm XLR condenser mic. This thing has a relatively neutral frequency response up through 2kHz where you start to see contouring leading to a boosted presence and air boost with a cut around 9kHz. Overall this thing has a pronounced proximity effect, but at a 3-6 inches you’ll find a smooth frequency response with nice boosted high frequencies without any stand out harsh frequencies except for the occasional sibilance.

Today I review the Zoom ZDM-1 Budget Podcasting Microphone. This kit has a dynamic mic, headphones, XLR cable, mic stand, and windscreen. The microphone has a clear sound with a fairly controlled low end which can get a touch wooly in the low mids if you get too close. It also suffers from plosives and shocks, but does a great job at background noise rejection. All round for $120 the mic sounds pretty great.
I also compare it to the SM58, sE V7, Rode Podmic, MXL BCD-1, Sontronics Podcast Pro, Shure SM7b, and Electro Voice RE20
