What does this FF newbie think of the most divisive game in the series?
Developed and published by Square, Final Fantasy VIII is a JRPG released in 1999 for the PlayStation. A remaster came out in 2019 for Nintendo Switch, PS4, Windows, and Xbox One.
Disclaimer: I completed FFVIII in early 2021 and made this video based on a review I wrote soon after finishing the game. I've played a few more FF games since, so it'll be a little while longer before my videos catch up with my progress.

Is FFII really the black sheep of the series? Let's take a look.
Developed and published by Square, Final Fantasy II is a JRPG first released in 1988 for the Famicom. It has received several remakes over the years, including the Dawn of Souls version for Game Boy Advance in 2004, which I focus on in this video.
Game footage in this video is from iPlayRetro on YouTube, since I couldn't record from my GBA. Go check out their channel: youtube.com/@iPlayRetro

Breath of Fire II ain't it, chief. Here's why.
Developed by Capcom, BOF II was released in 1994 for the SNES. It later saw a Game Boy Advance release in 2001 (2002 in the West).

This week's JRPG Quickie is Secret of Mana, Square's follow-up to Final Fantasy Adventure (a.k.a. Seiken Densetsu), originally released for the SNES in 1993. Let's look at how well Square translated the Mana series to home consoles.

Let's look at the sequel to one of my favorite JRPGs ever and see how it stacks up.
Developed by Square, Romancing SaGa 3 was originally released for the Super Famicom in 1995 but didn't get a Western release until way later, in 2019.

Final Fantasy IV has among the best reputations of all the games in the series. How does it hold up today?
Developed and published by Square, Final Fantasy IV is a JRPG released in 1991 for the Super Famicom. It was brought to the SNES as _Final Fantasy II,_ since it was only the second FF game released here.
Disclaimer:

Dragon Quest II gets a lot of flack these days. Is its reputation deserved?
Dragon Quest II was developed by Chunsoft and released in 1987 by Enix for the Nintendo Famicom. It is the successor to Dragon Quest (a.k.a. Dragon Warrior), the game that kickstarted the JRPG genre, and came to the West as Dragon Warrior II for the NES in 1990.

My interest in the Tales series was waning.. until Berseria.
Tales of Berseria was developed by Bandai Namco Studios and was first released in Japan in 2016, then later in the West in 2017.

This week's JRPG Quickie is Final Fantasy XIII-2, a.k.a. "We're sorry for Final Fantasy XIII", developed by Square Enix and first released in 2011. Was Square able to fix the problems fans had with the first game of the Fabula Nova Crystalis trilogy?
