Appearances can be deceiving. This General Electric cassette recorder has very good performance, despite its very inexpensive design and total lack of frills.

A failed truce in the 1970s battle between cassette tapes and 8-track cartridges: a player which can accept both formats in the same slot. Impossible? Not according to Soundesign, which achieved this feat in their 4645B stereo system in 1976.

Some interesting items seen at my local thrift store this past month. I didn't buy anything shown here. The near-lifesize Miata poster was amusing, but probably wouldn't have fit in my car to bring it home, and the oscilliscope probably was a good deal for the price, but I already have one that works fine.

Another Non-Audiophile-Approved equipment review -- this time of a USB cassette deck whose sound quality really surprised me, in a good way: the Grace Tape2USB and Tape2USB II, also sold as the Plexgear Soundsaver.

Also, the red lights along the track pulsate when a train is approaching. These used to be white light bulbs which would flash much more noticeably, but now they are all red LEDs to save energy and reduce maintenance.

I'm not a fan of chiclet-style keyboards, but this one is surprisingly good, with a nice tactile feel -- although its glossy finish is a fingerprint magnet. The mouse also works well but its high resolution (1000 DPI) may make it too fast unless you can turn down the sensitivity.

A recording of an unknown shortwave radio station playing Jeff Wayne's musical version of "The War of the Worlds", as received on a Realistic DX-390 (rebadged Sangean ATS-818), in 1996. The shortwave fading effect makes it sound even more creepy.

This is the redesigned NES from the early '90s, also known as the Toploader or NES2. It is smaller and more reliable than the original NES, but lacks the A/V outputs. It also lacks the 10NES lockout chip, so you can play bootleg or Japanese Famicom (with an adapter) games without any problems. I demonstrate it using the only game I have so far, Pinball.
