Have you heard of Natural Asset Companies? You need to become aware of what they are and, if they come to be, how they will affect all of us! A coalition of 23 state financial officers representing 22 states (including Utah and Idaho) is taking aim at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) over regulations enabling the formation of a new type of climate-focused company. Check out this article from Foxbusiness: https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics/22-states-take-aim-sec-climate-regulations-creating-new-type-company
Utah State Treasurer Marlo M. Oaks had taken the lead in voicing strong opposition to a proposed initiative by the SEC that may pave the way for the formation of a Natural Asset Company (NAC) on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). In a press release issued on December 11 (https://treasurer.utah.gov/for-utahns/treasurer-oaks-opposes-sec-proposal-to-allow-for-the-creation-of-a-new-type-of-company-designed-to-lock-up-private-and-public-lands/) , Oaks expressed concern over the proposal’s potential to significantly affect rural economies and public lands.
We are also working with Idaho’s Treasurer, Julie Ellsworth, in hopes she will be able to participate via ‘Zoom’. Be sure to join us as it will be a very informative and beneficial evening!
Marlo Oaks was appointed Utah’s 26th State Treasurer in June 2021. As the state’s chief investment and chief banking officer Marlo is responsible for debt, cash, and investments, including the $30 billion Public Treasurer’s Investment Fund. He also administers Utah’s Unclaimed Property Division.
Marlo spent 17 years overseeing multi-billion dollar investment portfolios. He is one of only two state treasurers with institutional investment experience. Marlo completed a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from BYU, an MBA from UCLA Anderson, and holds the CFA and CAIA designations.
