Ethereum Q&A: TheDAO - Why failure is a necessity for learning
Keywords/phrases: The DAO. I invest in a number of cryptocurrencies because the best way to learn is to do, and so you have to hold a token. I warned people that this is the first one, it's completely untested and will be extremely risky. The most interesting lessons come not from success but from failure. The most interesting science comes from analyzing the debris of a fiery explosion. You need destruction in order to learn; this isn't theoretical, we're doing them. Soft fork or fail? Should this precipitate a soft fork followed by a hard fork? The precedent may cause more problems than it solves. This doesn't change the fundamental nature of smart contracts, Internet of Things, DAOs, etc. and more of them will blow up. That's the price you pay for innovation. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KZTx8IYc9s
What is Segregated Witness (SegWit)? How do you know you’re using SegWit? SegWit fixes transaction malleability and enables further upgrades towards Bitcoin smart contracts. Can transaction malleability lead to denial-of-service (DoS) attacks? Does SegWit put witness data in a different block? Did SegWit change transaction validation? versus? Are there any security risks of invalid blocks?
CORRECTION: At ~2:07, I stated the incorrect BIP number for the Bech32 address format, which should be BIP173. BIP176 is about "bits" denomination. https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0173.mediawiki

Keywords/phrases: I'm perplexed by people in this community who think Bitcoin would thrive in a time of chaos and collapse. I've lived in a country with a currency crisis (twice) and a lot of really good people get hurt; we shouldn't be wishing for that. Bitcoin is not ready to absorb a global economic crisis. Unfortunately the system is very fragile and there's a good chance it could happen. Just because Bitcoin can act as a safe-haven investment, as an exit valve, just because Bitcoin spikes during events like Brexit or the yuan devaluation -- there's a big leap between that and "I hope the world burns so I make more on my bitcoins."

In this talk, Andreas explores the rise of the term "blockchain" as a counterweight to bitcoin. The term blockchain does not provide a definition, as it has been diluted to be meaningless. Saying "blockchain" simply invites questions, such as "what is the consensus algorithm". Meanwhile, bitcoin continues to offer an alternative to the traditional financial system. Andreas looks at the value of private ledgers, which he sees as having a small impact on finance, versus open, global and accessible payment and currency systems such as bitcoin which he sees as fostering a global revolution in finance and access to financial tools.

Could bitcoin becoming the world's reserve currency? Will it be more than digital gold? Why did gold not work out as a medium of exchange? Should we desire mainstream adoption if bitcoin becomes a mandated currency, or should we strive for currency choice? The only people who can afford to use surveillance currencies are those with a government that is not corrupt enough yet.
