In order for most LED replacement bulbs to work for turn signals and other systems where amperage/resistance matters, a resister needs to be used in order to get the bulb to function properly. However, I have seen some people claim that it needs to be put in series with the bulb, which may be the case with resistorless LED units, but nearly no one makes those.
This video shows how the flasher circuit works, and why these LEDs need to be paired with a resistor in parallel in order to function as desired. This thermal flasher demonstration may be specific to older designs, but it is the same method I used to get flashers to work on the 2005 Mercury Montego, a Ford product that has computer-monitored turn signal circuits.
