I heard a rumour that solder joins completed with paste are more brittle than usual. In this video I compared the strength of 2 identical rings. One was soldered with paste and the other was soldered with a regular panel of solder.
According to ChatGPT reflooding the join may improve its strength?? -
(The properties of the solder paste can depend on the specific composition of the metal powder and flux used. In general, solder paste joints may be more brittle than joints made with traditional liquid solder. This is because the metal particles in the paste are not as well-bonded as those in liquid solder and may be more prone to cracking or breaking. Additionally, the flux residue that may remain in the solder joint may also contribute to the brittleness.
However, it's worth noting that the brittleness of solder paste joints can be improved by the post-soldering process such as reflow soldering, that can help to improve the metallurgical bond between the metal particles.
It's also important to use the appropriate type of solder paste for the application. It is always best to consult with a professional or the manufacturer for specific recommendations for your application)

An exact replica of the iconic '94 Cap' Montana spray paint nozzle converted to be worn as a ring.
Made specifically for filming this video I just wanted to show how much time and care goes in to preparing the 2 part castings to create one these rings.
My last video of 2019 Thanks for watching!
The channel has potential to grow in to a great archive of jewellers knowledge with your help.
With patrons support I will be able to offer far more information than I am currently able to.
With over 2 decades of knowledge gained in the jewellery trade working with some of the best diamond mounters in the UK I can train practitioners of jewellery making, up to and far beyond the skill level found in High Street jewellers workshops.
I have been lucky enough to have been taught by actual Bond Street shop model makers and my ambition is to share what I have learned through out my career to as many people as possible.
My vehicle to do this is the Diamond Mounter YouTube channel and now after nearly 1 year of uploading video guides, its time to take it up a level.
My ambition is to be able to make instructional videos with not just silver, but gold and platinum also. Some proper jewellers soldering equipment will enable me to create much more special pieces too! This will open up a whole new world of information I have to share.
There are many specific methods and techniques used for the different precious metals and knowledge about gemstones I can teach that will never enter my videos unless I am actually working with them.
