The design of the sights on your pistol can limit single handed pistol manipulation in a self defense situation. In this video I compare the sights on my Springfield Operator 1911 and my Canik Mete SFT to show some of the differences in combat pistol sight design. Any pistol used for self defense needs to have sights heavy enough to allow for them to be used to rack the slide. Metal sights are much better than plastic pistol sights for these purposes. It is also important that the sights are not beveled in such a way that doesn't allow you to catch them on your belt, holster or other hard surface. The sights on my Springfield Operator 1911 are metal but are angled in such a way that makes catching them on something to rack the slide much more difficult. My Canik Mete SFT has sights that have a ledge on them specifically designed to be used for single handed pistol manipulation by being beveled to catch on surfaces and help you work the action. The Kentucky CCDW applicant course is a good way for inexperienced shooters to learn the principles of firearms safety and marksmanship, as well as learn about the laws governing the carrying of a concealed weapon within the commonwealth. The course consists of a minimum six hours of classroom instruction followed by a live fire exercise where the student shoots 20 rounds on a B21 target using safe firearm handling techniques. If you are inexperienced with handling a handgun, this class is designed to help you build skills and the confidence to safely handle, store and operate a handgun. There are many instructors across the Commonwealth of Kentucky who are certified to teach the course and qualify the applicant for a CCDW license. You can obtain a list of qualified instructors in your area by contacting your local sheriff’s office and asking for the names of instructors in your area. Some of the items you will need for this class include a reliable handgun and at least 50 rounds of ammunition.
