Degenerative Disc Disease is one of those conditions that perplexes a lot of patients that don't really understand exactly what it is. And to be completely honest, you really need to actually see what you're talking about, if someone's given you that diagnosis, I'd hope you've only been given that because you've had an MRI report because that and some element of X ray are the only real way in which you can diagnose these sorts of conditions. Now, the Degenerative Disc Disease is kind of a continuum, and it's important for you as patient to understand that continuum to a degree. Now on the one extreme, we have severely degenerated discs where this this space is almost gone, okay, there's, there's more or less no space is pretty much bone on bone, and we don't really have any disk left. And then the other end of the spectrum is a mildly dehydrated disk it will show up on an MRI for example, as not being quite as white, white, indicating fluid content, and that'll flag up and maybe commented on the report. So these two conditions affect essentially pathology that's effecting the disc it's invariably compression, excessive compression of our long period of time that is causing the disc to fundamentally degenerate. And one thing that we find it is often in pockets, it's very rare that someone will come in with profuse Degenerative Disc Disease throughout the entirety of the spine. What we see, especially in cases where it hasn't been dealt with effectively, which is why patients come to our door, is that it's one or two segments commonly the L4/5, L5/S1, it might, more frequ

Your back right now is being used in a different way to usual. If you were to think of your lower back like getting a pair of new shoes, your feet are used to the pressure points in your old shoes, so may often bleed or blister in the new shoes. Your feet and shoes have not adapted yet and neither has your back to this situation. The lockdown has caused us to act differently day-to-day, which places different stress points on the body, our hips aren’t as mobile as you’re probably spending more time sitting during the day.
Take a step back and understand why your back is hurting, and if you’re not sure please do sign up to our free membership area online at www.backinshapeapp.com to understand the mistakes that we often make that are not helping your back pain. In this situation we have an absence of control, so what can you do to adapt to these new stresses?
Try and walk around more than you have been. Think of your back as like a pond. If a pond doesn’t have regular throughflow of fluid and circulation, this can lead it to become stagnant. Without movement, your spine can pool inflammation. Change the way in which you’re doing things slightly to get that little bit more movement in.
We’ve been mentioning here the last few days about the towel stretch, this will also help to unload your discs, and remember to use ice as well for about 5 minutes, a few times a day. Use this instead of heat - of course a hot shower is likely to feel nice but it won’t be doing the inflammation any favours.
So if you’ve been having back pain over the last week, unless you’ve started to do some kind of home renovation or you’re moving lots of furniture around and you’ve thrown your back out, it’s likely to just be a flare-up due to the new situation we’re in.
The questions we answered today were:
What are you doing for your back on a daily basis?
I’ve been going for walks during the day and using the towel stretch as my lower back has been quite st
