Nearly 200 Protesters Arrested Supporting DREAM Act
Thousands gathered at the capitol Wednesday afternoon to protest in favor of the DREAM Act (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act), of which 182 chose to be arrested for sitting on the capitol steps. The arrestees were charged with “crowding, obstructing, or incommoding” the steps, and released after being processed on site. They will have to pay a $50 fine or go to court.
"This is something that has been really important for obviously many communities. We had people who came from all over the country, and I think the point was really clear," said Karla Hernandez-Mats, the president of United Teachers of Dade, FL. "We need a DREAM Act."
Two members of congress - Judy Chu and Luis Gutierrez - were among the arrestees.
Donald Trump cancelled DACA, an executive order allowing "Dreamers" - people who were brought to America illegally when they were children - leaving their status uncertain absent the passage of a bill like the DREAM Act.
While not a pathway to legal residency, DACA allowed eligible individuals to identify themselves to the government, pay a fine, and have their status deferred indefinitely, essentially preventing them from being deported.

Minneapolis and Hennepin County officials are spending at least $1 million to put up barriers and barbed wire for the trial of former officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd.
News2Share contributor Chris Juhn captured raw footage of the area around Hennepin County Government Center on Sunday.
Chauvin faces a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison. Jury selection begins Monday, and protests are expected.

A TERF-led group held a "Women Protest the ACLU" rally in front of the US Capitol over ACLU support for transgender people being in gendered spaces (prisons, sports, bathrooms) of their identity on Friday.
"There's no such thing as a trans woman," said rally organizer Christina Goeke. "There are only men pretending to be women. Female impersonators."
She tells her side: "Do not use the language of the opposition. There is no such thing as trans, just people pretending to be the opposite sex. Do not be kind. Being kind got us here. Be brave instead."
The rally drew no counter-protest.
"We stand together, side by side, we won't give up this fight," the rally attendees sang in front of the Capitol. "For women's rights are human rights, we won't let you forget."
One speaker expressed solidarity with UK TERFs and led a chant of "Only women have cervixes!"
Lead organizer of the rally Jennifer Thomas said that women now "are in prison with men, that will rape them."
"If Ted Bundy were alive today, he would be allowed to identify as a woman and transfer into a women's prison."
Matt Osborne, who says he has been a lifelong Democrat who worked to elect former Senator Doug Jones (D-Alabama), said that "Gender identity is a luxury belief."
"As seen in the example of J.K. Rowling, this is the modern ideological witch hunt."
One speaker at the "Women Protest the ACLU" rally at the Capitol today compared trans women's transitions to predatory mimetics in nature - where animals or plants mimic their prey to lower their guard.
"That is what so called trans women are, predatory mimetics," she said.
The final speaker at the TERF rally is a lawyer, and says "You don't need to be a lawyer to know the ACLU is crazy" while suggesting making their own legal orgs.
"We need a clan of lawyers to go after the ACLU, a group that is dedicated to dismantling the ACLU," agreed Jennifer Thomas before the rally concluded.

Drivers were irate Friday morning as environmental protesters blocked I-395 Northbound during rush hour traffic into DC to demand Biden declare a "climate emergency."
One driver got out, grabbed their banners, and threw them into the southbound lanes.
"Move before I pull my gun out" said another driver to protesters, claiming her mother is in the hospital. "Test me, fucking test me" she yelled as one activist backed up, who later told News2Share the driver indeed grabbed a gun inside the car.
One man, who had gotten out of a Ryder truck earlier to confront the environmental protesters sitting in the highway, took a different approach.
He shifted from arguing with the activists to Evangelizing them, even sitting down in front of them as he preached until police came.
In total, it was about a half hour before the police gathered enough units to issue warnings.
When it was time to actually make arrests, three stayed on the street, were handcuffed and taken away. One said the officers hurt his arms.
Some drivers clapped as the activists were taken away.
Traffic resumed.
