A cone is a three-dimensional figure that has one vertex and one circular base. The height of the cone is the length perpendicular from the base to the vertex. We compare the height to the slant height. We perform an experiment to explore the volume of a cone and the volume of a cylinder. We use a bowl of rice, one cone, and one cylinder, that have the same bases and heights. We fill the cone to the top with rice and pour the rice into the cylinder. We repeat and count how many cones of rice we need to fill the cylinder. We see the volume of a cone is 1/3 the volume of a cylinder. We compare a cone to a pyramid. A right cone and an oblique cone, with the same base areas and heights, will have the same volume.
