Historic: UK Woman Sentenced for Facilitating Female Genital Mutilation
In a landmark case, Amina Noor, a 40-year-old woman from Harrow, was sentenced to seven years in prison for facilitating female genital mutilation (FGM) on a three-year-old British girl during a trip to Kenya, marking a historic conviction under the UK's stringent FGM laws. This case is notable as the first instance in London's Metropolitan Police history of charging someone for assisting in carrying out FGM on British citizens abroad and only the second conviction for FGM in the UK. The judge labeled the act as "abhorrent" and "horrific," highlighting the severity of the crime. Noor, who had undergone FGM herself as a child, feared ostracization from her community but was ultimately held accountable for her actions. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy emphasized the Metropolitan Police's dedication to preventing FGM, encouraging victims to come forward and signaling a hope that the sentence will deter future crimes while raising awareness about the issue: “Our mission is to prevent FGM from taking place, working with local communities and expert health partners to achieve this and safeguard vulnerable children.”

In a controversial ruling that has sparked outrage among legal experts and activists, the Madhya Pradesh High Court in India denied protection for an interfaith Hindu-Muslim couple seeking to get married, declaring their marriage invalid under Muslim Personal Law. Citing the interpretation that a Muslim man cannot validly marry a Hindu woman considered an "idolatress or fire-worshiper," Justice G.S. Ahluwalia stated "As per Mahomedan law, the marriage of a Muslim boy with a girl who is an idolatress or a fire-worshipper is not a valid marriage. Even if the marriage is registered under the Special Marriage Act, the marriage would no longer be a valid marriage, and it would be an irregular (fasid) marriage." The ruling directly contradicts the intent of India's secular Special Marriage Act of 1954 which aims to enable interfaith unions, with critics arguing the court's definition of "prohibited relationship" under the law is flawed and discriminatory towards non-Muslim partners. ? A Hindu man in Malaysia created a video, that has since gone viral on social media, explaining how he is converting his Muslim wife to Hinduism. This revelation triggered much of the Muslim community in Malaysia. Later, a second video surfaced, this time from the Hindu man’s wife. In this video, she explained how she is a citizen of Indonesia and has since completed her journey of renouncing her faith in Islam while living there. Abdul Aziz, the Director of the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) told the public to resist speculation and to trust that the appropriate authorities will examine the video. He also reminded the public that legal action can be taken against anyone who tries to convert a Muslim according to the Control and Restriction Of The Propagation of Non-Islamic Religions Enactment, which is enforced in several states of Malaysia.
