Karl Kautsky. Nació en Praga el 16 de octubre de 1854, en el todavía poderoso Imperio austrohúngaro. Era hijo de Johan Kautsky, un afamado pintor, y su esposa Minna, actriz y autora de novelas admiradas por Engels. Durante su infancia la familia se mudó a Viena. Estudió Historia y Filosofía en la Universidad de Viena. En 1875, se convirtió en miembro del Partido Socialdemócrata de Austria (SPÖ). Entre 1885 y 1890, estuvo en Londres, donde conoció y se hizo amigo de Friedrich Engels. En 1891, fue el coautor del Programa de Erfurt del Partido Socialdemócrata de Alemania (SPD), junto a August Bebel y Eduard Bernstein.
Su amistad con Marx y, sobre todo, con Engels, y su habil defensa de sus posiciones en diversos debates, le permitieron a Kautsky establecerse como uno de los principales teóricos de la II Internaciona, altamente respetado y, hasta 1914, frecuente tratado como la máxima autoridad en cuanto al marxismo.
Después de la muerte de Engels en 1895, Kautsky se convirtió en uno de los más importantes e influyentes teóricos del socialismo y de la Segunda Internacional, formando el núcleo marxista del partido junto a August Bebel.
En esa época era considerado despectivamente por Trotski, entre otros, como el «legislador teórico del marxismo internacional».
Rompió con Rosa Luxemburgo y el ala izquierda del SPD en 1914 y, después de haberse integrado en el Partido Socialdemócrata Independiente entre 1917 y 1919, volvió a unirse al SPD en 1922. Para 1934, Kautsky escribió un trabajo titulado Marxismo y bolchevismo: democracia y dictadura.
En 1921 se incorporó a la Internacional 2 1/2 creada en oposición a la II Internacional y, en especial, a la Comintern. En 1924 regresó a Viena donde permaneció hasta 1938, cuando se traslado a Amsterdam, huyendo de los Nazis. Murió en Amsterdam el 17 de octubre de 1938.

Karl Kautsky merece ser llamado el arquitecto de la victoria bolchevique en octubre. Por supuesto, no estoy diciendo que Kautsky fuera necesariamente el primero en definir estas ideas, o que los bolcheviques no llegasen a ellas de forma independiente. Pero Kautsky respaldó con su autoridad las ideas tácticas clave del bolchevismo, dando claridad y confianza a los rusos con un efecto difícil de sobreestimar. Estas ideas se plasmaron en escritos concretos, muy alabados por los bolcheviques y utilizados por ellos en sus polémicas contra los “oportunistas” mencheviques. Las mismas ideas condujeron a la victoria a su partido en octubre y en la subsiguiente guerra civil. Lenin y los bolcheviques nunca rechazaron estas ideas ni los escritos en los que Kautsky las formuló.
Comprender de forma correcta la relación entre Kautsky y los bolchevique no es sólo un ejercicio académico, un “entretenimiento” de viejos marxistas. Como muestra el debate actual, la victoria rusa y la bolchevique son distorsionadas esencialmente si se sigue la folclórica versión de que los bolcheviques tuvieron éxito porque confiaban en la “insurrección” en lugar del “electoralismo”, una caricatura perpetuada tanto por los partidarios de Octubre, como por su enemigos. Tampoco la Revolución de 1917 tuvo nada que ver con el argumento de Lenin de que “la democracia soviética” era superior a la “democracia parlamentaria”, encarnada en la Asamblea Constituyente que fue disuelta en enero de 1918 por el gobierno soviético (en ese momento, una coalición de bolcheviques y eseristas de izquierda). Durante 1917, “el poder soviético” no era entendido en estos términos, ni por los bolcheviques ni por las masas soviéticas.
Por lo tanto, si queremos apreciar la centralidad de los consejos tácticos de Kautsky que contribuyeron a la victoria de Octubre, primero tenemos que documentar los vínculos concretos entre Kautsky y los bolcheviques. A continuación, vamos a examinar lo que la revolución no fue y refutar la versión habitual que acabamos de mencionar. Después de analizar las dinámicas políticas reales de 1917, concluyo utilizando la propia versión de Lenin para presentar una visión mucho más adecuada de lo que los “leninistas” aprendieron de su victoria.
