I have attempted to restore cast iron skillets before. That attempt turned out okay, but there was some seasoning in a couple of spots that I was not able to strip when I was doing the initial cleaning. No big deal. It didn't affect the usability of the skillet; however, it did bother me.
So this time, I decided to start things off with a lye bath. Lye is a solution made up of sodium hydroxide and water. It is a pretty caustic chemical, so be sure to observe all safety measures (gloves, goggles, etc.) if you use it. The purpose of the lye is to remove the old seasoning from the cast iron skillets. The sodium hydroxide will react with the polymerized oils that form the seasoning layer and dissolve it. However, it will not remove the rust from the skillet.
This is the first time I've ever tried using lye for this purpose, so let's see how it turned out.
