#188 My LACK OF TREE FELLING EXPERIENCE Really Showed On This One!
I had difficulty dropping this oak tree for a few reasons - mostly due to inexperience.
~~About Us~~ We're a 43 acre Christmas tree farm in central Virginia. We bought the property in November 2018 and have been documenting our whole journey starting this business from the ground up. We didn't have any ag experience prior to starting this business, so we're constantly learning as we go!
Today we test the Harbor Freight Quick Hitch on our Kubota L3901. The first implement I want to try is our 471lb box blade. The quick hitch is a category 1 implement that was on clearance, plus I was able to use a 20% coupon so I got it for just under $88 + tax. The quick hitch has a capacity of 2000 lbs.

This is our first year growing cosmos for u-pick flowers (and just our 2nd year doing u-pick flowers) and we've found the cosmos to be a standout performer in the garden. Though there a few tricks to growing and maintaining cosmos, we've found them to be pretty easy over all to grow.
The zinnias grew even better for us this year than last year because we got the fertilization right. The wiggle test for zinnias has helped us harvest zinnias at the appropriate time to get the best vase life.

We're using ground cover for the first time over part of our flower patch. This is by far the largest and most ambitious flower patch we've ever done and we're really looking forward to getting everything going so we can host our flower festival in August and September. This year, we're growing zinnias, cosmos, calendula and multiple kinds of sunflowers

We built 3 things with pallets that we'll use on our Christmas tree lot, including a checkout station, a wreath display rack, and a hot chocolate stand photo prop.

Today we take soil samples from several locations around the farm in order to boost soil fertility and help our christmas trees grow! The soil analysis will help us determine the right fertilizer and other soil amendments to add to the soil.

~~More about this video~~
Our last soil samples were taken over 2 years ago, and we've had a lot of tree losses. We're hoping we can continue to improve soil fertility while we learn more about growing trees and improve tree survival rates.

Even though we've had a drought and our Fall colors are muted, the changing leaves are still a pretty sight around Woods Tree Farm here in Amelia County, Virginia.
Hope you enjoy this short video which includes footage from my DJI Mavic Air drone. Footage shot at 1080p 30fps.
We were surprised to see some of the vibrante red and orange fall foliage around the property. Many of the trees that were bright red last fall have already turned orange or brown and have dropped many of their leaves. Hopefully the weather will be more cooperative next year and we'll be able to get even better drone footage next year that accurately highlights the beautiful fall colors around the farm.

We finally finished planting sunflowers for this season's u-pick patch. We now have nearly 1/2 acre of flowers including cosmos, zinnias, and 5 types of sunflowers. Many of the sunflowers we're planting are Pro Cut varieties that are pollenless and should have a longer cut life. We also leverage our fields and flowers for photographers as a money-maker.
We use the earthway garden seeder to plant most types of sunflowers, though some smaller seeds don't work well in the seeder.
