Jenni's story:
Sarah and I met in college in 2004 through friends. I was newly single and she was ready to pounce after waiting (semi-patiently) for the "final breakup". We both clicked instantly and like a good lesbian couple, I moved in a couple weeks later… But here's the catch… we were boyfriend and girlfriend. Sarah transitioned to female only two years ago.
Our relationship was fast and furious. Friends warned her that she was my rebound but that couldn't be further from the truth. We were engaged only two months after we stayed dating and were married the following year, in the middle of our first year teaching. We were soulmates, she said. I was skeptical of the whole idea of soulmates, but I was deeply in love. It wasn't long after we got married that our first son came along in June of 2007, followed by our second son in May of 2009. Not long after, I started noticing small changes in my "husband"... Sarah had always had a feminine air to her, but it really started to show through and we kept it as "our little secret".
In late spring of 2016, there was no more denying it for either of us. I too was struggling with my own identity. I was gay. Lesbian, but I don't like that word never I was bullied with it endlessly as a young girl. One night, a few days after the Orlando night club shooting, I rolled over in bed and like it had been planned, only it wasn't… Sarah said, "I'm transgender." And I said, "Well thank goodness because I'm gay." And just like that… we were no longer the same husband and wife that we had been for the last eleven years. We were now two wives.
We told our sons who were then turning 8 and 10 and they were extremely supportive. Our older son identifies as part of the LGBT community as well. They were excited at the prospect of now having two moms and making the change. We also had to talk to the schools that we teach at (we're public school teachers in a conservative state) and they too were overwhelmingly supportive, as well as our families. It was shocking.
